I will advise your friend to adhere to "HONESTY IS BEST POLICY" principle. Explain interviewer the facts where he is not defaulter whereas circumstances so explained is beyond his control.

Dear Tripti,
I understand your concern for ur friend, everyone does mistakes but repeating them is a wrong thing. Many senior HR professionals might have read your request, they will definitely contact you for your friend’s details as you said that he is excellent in his performance and he is regretting for what he has done and hope he will not repeat such mistakes. No company wish to loose calibre personnel, may be he will be under observation for some time until the company get confidence on him.
So no worries, let him try thru references he will certainly get an employment soon as per my view. Certain exceptional cases can be taken on humanity basis after all we are human beings.
As a member I request all the senior HR professionals who are in a position to take decisions in company kindly give him a chance as the total family is dependent on him and a talented person is loosing his hope on life.
Best Regards
Naini.

Any applicant has to be ( expected to be !) honest with regard to his employment is concerned. In his attempt to get into a job, if certain information was concealed by him, it becomes a supression of material information, whether done wilfully or thro oversight. Hence employer has the right to initiate disciplinary action against the employee. Extend of punishment has to be decided by the disciplinary authority. So employer is right in their action legally.
Now there is nothing wrong for an applicant to openly state that there was a gap between education and employment or between employments. What is wrong in it ? It is possible and very common for Indian University Graduates. So ask your friend not to get panic about the gap. But explain to interviewers and also in the CV the truth.
Truth will prevail always.

hi trupti,
AS an HR I will suggest, one should never bluff or cheat anyone. whatever you do comes back to you. so its better to do good work than going for negative things. your friend may due to need or greed of the bank job must have done such a thing.
But he forgot that when reference check is done the ex-company will be giving the details as per the records.
Tell your friend not to forge his resume. first he lost his job coz he misrepresented 3 months and now again if repeats it for 5 months unemployment, that will give a negative picutre about his candidature. It will be generalised that this person is forging the documents. its better to be honest and to stay away from all such complications
regards,
sheetal
