New to HR: How Do You Keep Employees Motivated Every Day?

anujt12@gmail.com
Respected Seniors,

I am a fresher in HR, and my query is - How to motivate employees on a day-to-day basis?

By offering Better Compensation,
By providing Better Induction,
By demonstrating Better Behavior.

Please advise.

Hi Anujit,

Thanks for your opinion RSK. It's nice.

As you are a fresher, you will be very eager to do something to prove yourself.

I feel that the word "motivation" will not be conveyed by our inspiring words. They should come to know it through our activities dedicated to them.

I share some of my opinions, as of now I have gone through:

1. Better to be kind and polite with all the employees. It's better not to show that you are their boss and they are your subordinates.

2. It's better not to simply assign work to them. Ask for volunteers to do that, so that they can prove themselves capable of doing it perfectly, and the work will be completed on our end.

3. Better to give nice appreciation for whatever they do, so that they will start loving their job and approach their tasks more intensively.

4. Better to do your work by yourself to inspire others. For example, if you want your employees to complete a document or assignment, it's better not to burden them with the full workload. Involve yourself in the task to show support, so they will be encouraged to do it voluntarily or engage in other activities afterwards and enjoy working with you.

5. Better to share your assignments given by your boss and ask them to give a presentation in a meeting, so they will understand their worth and importance in their job.

6. Better to try to understand if they are overloaded. If so, find another way to make them comfortable.

Please try this and provide your suggestions if I am wrong anywhere.

Dear Anuj,

Nothing motivates employees more than empowerment. Please advise your management to implement this crucial HR intervention. Offering a high salary may only buy an employee's time, whereas empowerment truly energizes them. However, putting this into practice is often easier said than done, as few managements are willing to commit to such changes!

Any motivation techniques could only remain stable for a certain period, perhaps for 2 days or 2 hours. You could achieve this by using the workers' participation method. Invite their views, ask them to come up with new ideas, and make them feel how important they are to the organization.

Read about workers' participation here: [Human Resource](http://howhr.blogspot.com) 😊

Other than all these, you can motivate them (as you asked on a day-to-day basis) by recognitions and complimenting on their performance. It directly motivates them to work better.

Nothing motivates more than what an open culture can do for you, where employees are free to talk to their seniors, and seniors involve their juniors in sharing information. Money can motivate you to stay with the company for some time but cannot motivate you to work at your full potential. Other practical demotivators can be:

1. Delayed payment of salaries
2. Cumbersome process for claiming what you have already spent for the company
3. Unclear systems and policies
4. Suffocating workstations
5. Forced late sittings

Hope this makes sense.

Prashant

Other than all these, you can motivate them (as you asked on a day-to-day basis) by recognitions and complimenting on their performance. It directly motivates them to work even better.

Hi,

I agree with Anjut; no two employees have the same requirements or needs, so motivation is a complex issue. What motivates one person may not motivate another.

There are several factors associated with motivation:

- Intrinsic and Extrinsic factors are associated with one's job and life.
- The best approach is for HR to look into the matter in small or medium-sized organizations, to try to find out what motivates each employee. However, in the case of a large organization, the immediate superior should be the person concerned about it. They need to know what motivates their juniors.

Most of the time, concern for employees and empowerment are great motivators. In times of recession, job security is always crucial. Assurance that the organization cares for them, support from top management are all important, and I believe that motivates them. 😉

I agree with a lot of the comments above.

The key to motivating employees is creating an environment where employees are self-motivated. This is much harder than said, but it is accomplished by engaging your employees. Engaging your employees involves a number of areas and needs buy-in from the leadership. Here is a list of some of the key areas that need to be addressed to increase employee engagement and motivation:

1. Vision - Leaders have to share the vision and strategy of their organizations. This allows employees to follow and help support the strategy.
2. Empowerment and ownership - Employees need to be empowered to do their jobs. They also have to be held accountable for the results.
3. Recognition - Leaders need to recognize the work the employees do and ensure the employees understand how their work impacts the business and the customers they support.
4. Respect - Need to treat employees with respect, show them that you value their skills and abilities.

There are other things as well, such as transparency, communication, and the basics such as compensation, but these four will take you a long way in motivating your employees.

Two employees may not have the same requirements or needs. Though motivation is a complex concept, the inspiration of our behavior will connect all of them, and that would be great motivation for them. For example, the universal truth is that no one will be ready to die in any situation for anyone or anything. However, it was an exception during the struggle for freedom because every Indian was motivated by the inspiration of their leaders' behavior. They were serious and ready to do anything. Sorry, I am going somewhere out of the topic :D.

Similarly, the leader's approach will have a greater impact on each and every employee. If you still find it unbelievable, please try asking about the boss to a person who hates their job. They must start scolding their boss in the right way :icon1:. Please let me know your suggestions about this opinion.

Good Day,

I seem not to be receiving any mails from Cite HR anymore. For the past week or so, I haven't received any mails, and I would appreciate it if this could be restored. I must admit that logging on to this site has really been helpful and has improved my performance in general within my organization. Very informative and useful to me.

Thank you,
Evelyn
