Considering an Employee Relations Role in a BPO: Is It More Stressful?

I would like to seek suggestions from senior professionals or those in related fields. I recently had an interview at Aegis BPO for an Employee Relations profile. I am wondering if this role could be more stressful as it is in a BPO setting. I am a bit confused, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a past employee of Aegis BPO Chennai. I want to know one thing from you. Are you an experienced person in HR or a fresher? If you are really interested in Core HR, don't change your profile. This is my suggestion. It's all up to you to make a decision.

First of all, thanks to all for the valuable advice. I am experienced in recruitment but I don't want to continue with it. I have completed B.Com and then a Masters in Business Administration. I am more keen on a generalist profile, but entry is a problem. How should I go about it? Can anybody help me out with what preparation I have to do to get into a generalist profile? What are the basic skills and expertise one should have for that?

Let me also tell you that I have chosen the generalist path because it is the safest as you will be open to any industry.

I am also a recruiter and a member of this site. My suggestion is that you continue your job in HR. For other positions, you need to gain at least 1 year of experience before you can achieve success.

Hi,

In a BPO, you have a very large scope to learn about HR-related matters rather than statutory matters. Most of the acts will not be applicable, but HR activities are prevalent. Try to grasp things and learn the different facets of HR, whether it may be in the BPO or Manufacturing industry.

It's a lovely opportunity. The profile is a part of an HR job only, and I am also handling the same. Therefore, my advice is that you can take it sportively as your influence has a lot more in stabilizing the attrition rate as far as a BPO is concerned.

My personal advice is that you take up an HR post in an International BPO, where you have a lot more opportunities to learn than in a domestic one.

In a BPO, you have the opportunity to learn about HR-related matters. Actually, many acts may not be applicable, but as part of a BPO, there are numerous HR activities. If you aim to gain knowledge for your future or aspire to become an HR manager, consider pursuing a HR generalist profile. Alternatively, after gaining experience in a BPO, you could transition to the industry. In my opinion, employee relationship management is not a major aspect of HR (although it is crucial for BPOs due to high attrition rates); it is a smaller function within HR.

I should say this is a good opportunity, grab it. You will get to learn a lot of things, and trust me, it's a very challenging role! I am a fresher, did my MBA, and then I joined a reputed BPO in the ER role. It's been 2 and 1/2 years, and it's still going well.

As you have recruitment experience, try this now so that by the time you reach a senior/manager role, you will know all the functions. This will make you a stronger and more competent person in reality. All the best.
