Leave Calculation Confusion: Do Holidays Count as Leave Days?

Dear All,

I need some clarification if anybody can help for the benefit of all. If an employee took leave from Friday to Monday, we usually calculate the leave for 4 days (inclusive of Saturday and Sunday).

My question is if the employee took the leave before the national holiday or festival holiday and after the holiday, will we include the holiday also as leave or do we have to take only 2 days leave alone?

Hi,

National holidays are not included in your regular leave entitlement. They are considered extra or bonus leave. 🙂🎉

Dear Ramanathan,

In case any employee takes leave before the national holiday or festival holiday, then that day will not be counted in the leave tenure, and the leave of that employee will be counted from the next day onwards (the day after the holiday). The rest of the leaves depend upon the "Leave Policy of your company."

National and mandatory holidays are not to be counted as leave availed by employees. Inclusions of Saturdays and Sundays will depend on your organization's leave policy.

You are calculating right. Because before a holiday and after a day, if there is a working day and the employee is absent, it will be deductible.

If you take PL, then Saturday or Sunday will not be counted in leave. But in case of sick leave, if you are on leave on Friday and Monday, then Saturday and Sunday will be counted according to the company policy.

Dear Ramanathan ji,

Usually, for the calculation of EL leaves, the National, Festival, and Weekly Offs are excluded. If the person has applied for CL, it will be included. However, it is purely based on the company's Leave Policy. So, does your company have any such policy?

Dear Sir,

My name is Pradeep, and I work in a private limited company. I would like some clarification on availing leave. I took a day off on Saturday (CL - went out of station) and returned on Sunday night. Upon returning from my trip, I was affected by viral fever and could not resume work on Monday, which was supposed to be my joining day. Therefore, I took rest, and on Tuesday, I submitted an SL with a Medical Certificate.

Sir, could you please advise me if Sunday will be counted as leave? Will it be considered as 3 days leave (Saturday/Sunday/Monday) or only Saturday counted as CL and Monday as SL (for only 2 days)?

Hi Ramanthan,

If an employee takes time off immediately before or after a public holiday, that should be considered as a leave. Actually, we may or may not follow this protocol. If you want to implement this policy, then we need to consider many things so that we can justify the policy that we follow.

An employee has taken leave from Friday to Thursday. If Saturday, Sunday, or any holiday falls within that duration, it will be counted as part of the leave. Weekly offs or holidays are payable only if the employee is present before or after the weekly off or holiday.

If someone takes leave starting or ending with a declared holiday, it will be excluded. However, if it falls in between leave days, then it will be counted as leave.
