I recommend you identifying the requirements of the boss. Find out what information he needs to be given daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, half-yearly and yearly. Once you do that then standardise the format. Show the draft of the report to the boss and get it approved.
From HR side, generally bosses expect information on recruitment, salary-related issues, employee discipline, employee conflict, employee separation etc.
