I am an HR professional with 10 years of experience in a generalist role. I took a break in my career and moved to the USA with my husband. I am on an H4 dependent visa; hence, I could not work. It has been 1 year now, and I am still here, although there is a probability that we may have to go back to India in the next two years. I don't want to waste these years doing nothing; at the same time, I would like to do something that can add value to my profile and help me get back on my career track after I go back to India.

Seeking Advice on Courses in the USA

As the labor laws and IR are different in the USA compared to India, I am a bit confused. I need suggestions from experienced HR professionals about the course to be done in the USA.

You will find the course details through emails. Instead of doing the course, if you go through the magazines available there to understand the IR/HR environment, you can write articles proposing amendments or suggestions to both countries in your spare time.

Good luck with making the best use of your time.

In the circumstances explained, I presume you may have a PG in HR. Supposing you are yet to complete it, you may pursue your MBA-HR through a distance learning program or BGL or Diploma in LL and other courses related to your field from Indian institutions. If you have an interest in some other programs, short-term certificate courses can be finished during your stay in the USA. Even if you are not able to attend exams during this stay, you may write them after your return to India, one after the other, as you might complete the course in absence. All the lessons can be received at your Indian address if necessary. This might help you secure a decent job when you are back in India and with a view that you will be able to adjust your chores as well. However, for courses in the US, do you require a student visa? Probably you may get some light on these US options from this thread:

6 Options for H-4 Visa Holders - Happy Schools Blog <link updated to site home> (Search On Cite | Search On Google)

Some extracts are given here:

"Options for H4 Visa Spouse

I can see 6 options for a spouse on an H4 Visa in the USA:

- Find a full-time job and have the employer sponsor an H1B Visa.
- Find a consultant and have them apply for an H1B Visa.
- Find a full-time job that qualifies in Cap-Exempt H1B.
- Go to School on an H4 Visa.
- Go to School on an F1 Visa.
- Volunteer in your field on an H4 Visa.

I would like to hear from H4 Visa holders about the above 6 options and which one you think is the best and why.

Hi Deepika,

Don't be depressed. You are well capable, well-educated, and have good experience in the field. It doesn't matter much the gap you have; it matters how strong your willpower is. There are many women like you on H4, but please don't think negatively.

Your gap of 4-5 years is always less than your remaining entire life…

- Try to get H1 if possible.
- If you are interested, do an MS.
- There are lots of community colleges that offer some free courses you can join.
- Volunteer in non-profit organizations, e.g., library, medical center, etc.
- Register with a Time Bank organization.
- Do certification related to your technology, e.g., SCJP.

Be happy because life is beautiful.

All the best.

Hello Deepika,

I came to the US in 2007 with 3 years of IT experience and high hopes. I am sailing in the same boat with 5 years out of the market. As per my experience here in the US, I would suggest you look for some master's degree in universities near you and start your master's. In that way, you can get your visa converted to an (F1) student visa on which you can work for 20 hours per week while pursuing your studies. Later on, after finishing your degree, you can work for two years if you are on a project with some company during your internship period. With this process, you'll gain some US work experience, and then you will surely find a company to sponsor your H1."

All the best.

Regards,
kumar.s.
