Hello,

I have 6 years of BPO experience and want a career change in HR. I can't plan MBA now but in the near future... however, is it possible to start a career in HR without prior experience? Please suggest.

Mallika

Hi Mallika,

Without an MBA degree and prior experience, I think it is quite difficult. At the same time, I can't say it is impossible either. If by luck you get any opportunity, then you shall kick-start your career. Even for that, you should learn HR skills covering all core HR subjects.

Hi Malika,

Well, Jeevarathnam is right. Without management studies, it is quite tough to make a career in HR. But as you are interested in the HR field, I guess you are collecting knowledge in this area. Go through this site, HR; every topic. It will give you practical experience. Also, you should explore the field of HR in which you want to enter. I think recruitment will be easy for you, and you can learn it very soon. If you don't want to pursue an MBA course, you can opt for any crash course related to the field.

Mallika,

As such, it would be difficult to start a career in HR without any degree or experience in HR. But it is not impossible. You can join any company or placement consultancy at a fresher level, and you will definitely find your way.

Hi Mallika,

Below are my suggestions for a successful career transition to HR.

Experience:

You have good experience in the BPO industry, and you can definitely use it to start your HR career. A few things you can do are:

1) If you are still working in a BPO, try to take an internal transfer to the HR Recruitment team (It's okay if they offer you an entry-level role there). You have knowledge of the kind of profiles needed in BPOs, and with this, you can quickly pick up recruiting for this industry.

2) If you are not currently employed, try to find a job in a Recruitment Consultancy specializing in the BPO sector. Many are eager to provide you with quick exposure. All you need to do is approach it with a learning attitude.

Education:

You will need to start with some formal education in HR. A few things you can do are:

1) Begin with a part-time weekend or distance learning HR diploma course with a reputable institute. This can take 1 to 2 years. Some good institutes that provide these courses are Welingkar, NMIMS, and Symbiosis.

2) Another option is to opt for a satellite course offered by Tier 1 colleges like XLRI and IIM Lucknow. Any of these courses can help you gain knowledge in all areas of HR without compromising too much of your time.

This can be a starting point, and in the future, you can shape it as you desire. Remember, a good start is half the battle. All the best!

Hi all,

I am new to this world. I just have a certain query regarding HR recruitment, i.e.,

1) Currently, I am working as a Quality Analyst in a BPO. Can I change my career to HR recruitment?

2) Owing to certain financial issues, I am pursuing graduation through distance education. Would that cause any hindrance while applying for an HR recruiter position?

3) I would be completing my graduation this year. Also, right now, I am planning for post-graduation. But I am confused about whether I should apply for distance education in MBA or PGDM.
