You can go to google and search for Instructional designing tools ... they would tell you a lot about how to chose training aids. In fact if you go through the ADDIE model ..the concept would be quite clear ... for eg it talks about to how to identify the content as Procedure, process, principle etc and then how to portray it
As far as role of a trainer is concerned one google search will give you lots of answers. In case you are not able to find anything concrete let me know i will definitley help you out.
