Dear Preetam,

What exactly is on your mind? Does the non-usage of PPE cause accidents, or does the usage of PPE prevent accidents? My dear friend, try to acquire in-depth knowledge. If you are a safety professional, then think about it in a positive manner.

There are many threads about welding in this forum. Please search for them. All the best.

Dear Preetam Deshpande,

I suggest you go through the following link. There is almost everything regarding welding. After going through the below thread, if you have any further queries, please let us know.

Dear Shaik Murtuza,

Thanks for sharing such a nice presentation with us. Really great one. Thanks & Keep on sharing with us.

Dear Abhay,

I don't find anything wrong in what the thread starter wrote in his post. Non-use of PPE can also be a cause of accidents. However, your point is also not wrong. We just have to boost up the newcomers for them to stay with us. Give positive comments and try our best to help others.

Keep on sharing and keep up the pace.

Dear All,

Just to add my small contribution to this discussion. The direct cause of an accident is typically an Unsafe Act or an Unsafe Condition that has been created, releasing the hazard. Loss of control of a hazard leads to accidents. Using PPE will not prevent the accident, but it will protect the individual or reduce the impact of the hazard release.

Dear All,

Just want to emphasize what I said with an example: Non-use of PPE can also be a cause of accidents. Looking forward to having a discussion on this if anyone disagrees with me.

One person was not wearing a helmet while working. Suddenly, a bolt fell on his head. If he had worn the helmet, he would not have been injured. Hence, the non-use of PPE can be a cause of accidents. If he had worn the helmet, this incident could have been classified as a near miss.

Thank you.

....with due respect to all senior members .... Kindly ask 5 Why for above case and find out that is " Non Usage of PPE " causes the accident ? Regards, Abhay

When analyzing the above case, you will identify a number of contributory causes. PPE non-usage is one among them, or in other words, it is the unsafe act done by the person, one of the contributory reasons. This validates once again that the non-use of PPE can cause accidents.

There are physical and systemic factors, rather than just human error, behind this case.

@Dipilji,

"5 WHY" is a simple but powerful tool to use with any problem-solving activity. It's a technique to help you get past the symptoms of a problem and to find its root causes. Simply ask the question "why" up to five times. Of course, there's no magic in this number of questions. It may take six or it may take three. The important thing is that you use this most powerful of words to peel away the layers that envelop any problem.

Dear Abhay This time you are correct... We have to keep on asking why till we reach to the key factors or root causes which leads to the accident... May be three or may be ten...

Dear All,

This is with respect to the use of PPE. The use of PPE is one of the last methods of risk control measures. The hierarchy of risk control measures are as follows:

1. ELIMINATION - Eliminate the risk if possible.
2. If elimination is not possible, try substitution.
3. If substitution is not possible, try engineering controls.
4. If engineering controls are not feasible, try administrative controls like a work permit system.
5. If administrative controls are not possible, then resort to using PPE.

Dear All,

The example of a bolt falling on the head of a person without a helmet causing an accident is not exactly correct in my view. The incident initially is the falling bolt. If the bolt did not fall, there would be no accident. However, the impact of the bolt falling on a head without a helmet is greater compared to falling on a helmeted head.

So, all the helmet can do is reduce the gravity of the impact; it cannot prevent the bolt from falling. An unsafe act has caused the bolt to fall, leading to other consequences when it hits an unhelmeted head.

Dear Sir,

Some persons in my department are wearing the safety goggles while working, but improvement is inadequate. Therefore, please send a PowerPoint presentation on robo welding, MIG, and spot welding so we can measure the safety parameters and reduce the near-miss trends as well as incidents. Some presentations are very nice and helpful.
