Hello sir :
I am Ruban pursuing MSW(H.R). I attended lot of group discussion from my knowledge 1st step is to give the familiar topic which should be know to every one and start motivating the students to talk in there local language. 2nd step is train the students to listen, to speak, to take inciative, to lead a team if the conversation goes out of the topic..... these were the things which gives the extra marks to the students.3rd step:train the students by conducting lots of group discussion. This is how i learned. If u want me to ask any question u can ask me.
Thanks and regards
Ruban Kumar.

Hi Bindusriram,
Students can do better in Group discussions if they are encouraged to read news papers, magazines current topics etc... and with that a lot of practice on verbal communication skills.
The more you will think in a language the more you start to speak that language properly.
Practice is another Mantra for discussions as Ruban has already mentioned.
For interviews, prepare a set of questions which are generally asked in the interviews, some basic questions and some subject specific....and then conduct mock interviews with the candidates/students..
Hope this answers your query...

Archna

Hello Bindusriram,

I had the opportunity to attend a lot of sessions on Group Discussion in my school and college life. From whatever I have learnt, I can suggest that there should be a systematic approach to G.D. First of all there should not be more than 8-10 students in a group. Out of these, you can select one of the team members to be the group leader. Give a simple topic and ask them to communicate in English only. At first it will be a little difficult but gradually, they will gain confidence. Ask each member of the group to say some points in favour or against the topic. Then, the group leader will write down all the points and recite the conclusion to all the other groups. You can keep changing the group leader in some duration. But, the main aspect of G.D. should be that we need to DISCUSS and not ARGUE.

For Interviews, conduct mock interviews and encourage them to speak. I think unless and until they get the confidence to speak, it will not help. Ask them to tell about themselves, their hobbies, etc.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Pratik Raj

Dear Ms. Bindu Sriram,
GROUP DISCUSSION is a very useful tool where you will find numerous benefits if you implement it perfectly. Below are the benefits of GROUP DISCUSSIONS that you can implement for your students.

1) To eliminate COMMUNICATION PHOBIA(shyness), which makes them communicate effectively without any fear/shyness. Also helps them to introduce themselves in a positive way rather being left behind in the crowd.
2) To practice GOOD PRONUNCIATION TACTICS. Apply TONGUE TWISTERS
3) To enhance READING SKILLS - Make them read NEWS PAPERS just like PROFESSIONAL NEWS READERS
4) Building POSITIVE ATTITUDE & BODY LANGUAGE - Ask your students to watch others individual behaviour, that includes actions, gestures, sign language etc
5) To develop command over language - EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS - Ask your students to discuss and debate on a topic with limitations else they will start arguing with each other and the objective is not met.
6) SHARING KNOWLEDGE - CREATIVITY - this can help your students to project or unleash their HIDDEN TALENTS.
7) How to become a GOOD OBSERVER - This improves PATIENCE and LISTENING SKILLS which students need to practice by concentrating and implementing ACTIVE LISTENING PROCESS
8) MOCK INTERVIEWS - Assign roles of an INTERVIEWER and APPLICANT to a group of students and ask them to experience INTERVIEW PROCESS.

I do agree with Mr. Pratik's suggestions about limiting students not exceeding 10 or 15 MAX. You can do lot more in a more effective way, if you plan well in advance.

Have a nice evening.

With profound regards

Dear Ms. Bindu Sriram
If you possess excellent training skills where you can succeed in touching your students heart then please try to train them to choose their best career. You should have a vision about FUTURE.

I wish to reveal few secrets that would help us to get our things done. Also this will help us to achieve success in our PROFESSIONAL & PERSONAL LIFE. i had implemented this in my life and results are terrific. Especially those who are starting the CAREER, irrespective of specialization, need to implement this at early stage, so that you can experience the results in your favour.

1)A t the outset we need to change ourselves rather expecting others to change. We can’t change the way things happen unless and until we have changed ourselves that makes things happen the way we want.

2) We should stop complaining about others. Ofcourse, sometimes complaint may work as "A BLESSING IN DISGUISE" but not all the times. We need to learn from our mistakes and start correcting ourselves.

3) We should only RESPOND but should never REACT. We should learn how to find out a solution to a problem rather creating a problem for the existing problem.

4) Please remember and follow this principle "NOBODY IS PERFECT AND I AM NOBODY", but it doesn't mean we should not practice PERFECTION. We should try our best to deliver the BEST OUTPUT.

5) We need to apply logic before we do anything

6) Planning is must and please follow SYSTEMATIC PROCEDURES.

7) PERFECT IMPLEMENTATION FOLLOWED BY FEED WILL YIELD DESIRED RESULTS.

8) POWER OF BELIEF. We need to believe in our self and whatever we do but it doesn't mean that we should believe and expect good results out of BAD THINGS.

9) Always maintain POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE and keep MOTIVATING PEOPLE.

10) Keep APPRECIATING the good work and even if it is not up to the mark. APPRECIATION is a kind of MOTIVATION which can increase or boost EMPLOYEE MORALE.

11) Always try to have control on your mind and heart. This can be made possible if you learn to focus on your goals.

12) Learn to differentiate between GOOD & BAD(EVIL)

13) Be always STRAIGHT FORWARD in your life.

14) Learn to LIVE - CONTENDED LIFE.

15) DO GOOD AND YOU WILL BE GOOD.

If there is anything i can do, please feel free to write to me.

Infact its was my wife who brought major changes in my life and owe my life and everything to her. The second person but more supportive than wife is my MOM. Truly, she is a POSITIVE MOTIVATOR. Though my wife demotivated me many times but i learned many things by doing things in a positive way rather getting demotivated.

Wish you all GOOD LUCK.

Methods of Group Decision Making

No two groups will ever function in the same way while involved in the process of decision making. Some are proactive groups while there are other groups, which need a driving force or a facilitator to facilitate the process. There are several methods of group decision-making. Here are some of the common methods employed in the process of decision-making:

Authoritarian Style

The authoritarian style is like a dictatorship, in which the decision ultimately rests in the hands of one person. This style of decision-making is applicable in the presence of a powerful person who dictates the entire process of decision-making and has the final authority on the outcome. This style, although in use at various places, tends to have more disadvantages than advantages because the people whose opinions are disregarded might have negative feelings about the entire process. A variation of this method is the minority control method wherein the group discusses the issues but the power of decision-making rests not in the hands of one but a small group of people within the group.

Brainstorming

This group decision-making method is best when the decision-making has to be started from scratch, which means creating the various options and then weighing them. This is an excellent method for group decisions, which is very popular owing to the complete creative freedom it offers to all the participants. There can be a facilitator to facilitate the entire discussion just to ensure that the people don’t digress. The facilitator can merely help to start off the conversation, provide subtle hints and nudges when the participants get stuck and thus help to make effective and creative group decisions. The positive aspect of this method is that it values the opinion of every individual member and the final decision is reached by consensus.

Voting Based Method

This is a group decision-making process, which is convenient to use when the group has certain set of defined options before it and needs to pick out the optimum solution. A voting system allows every participant to cast his/her vote for the option that he/she thinks is the best. The option that gathers the maximum number of votes is selected. This method however does not value the individual opinion of each and every participant in the group. A variation of this method is the majority method wherein a majority of people within the group has the power to pass the final decision.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Group Decisions

Like any other process, the process of taking group decisions has its own sets of advantages and disadvantages. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of group decisions:

Advantages of Group Decisions:
· Group decisions help to combine individual strengths of the group members and hence has a set of varied skill sets applied in the decision making process.
· Individual opinions can be biased or affected with pre-conceives notions are restricted perspectives, group decision help to get a broader perspective owing to differences of perception between individual in the group.
· A group decision always means enhanced collective understanding of the course of action to be taken after the decision is taken.
· A group decision gains greater group commitment since everyone has his/her share in the decision making.
· Group decisions imbibe a strong sense of team spirit amongst the group members and helps the group to think together in terms of success as well as failure.
Disadvantages of Group Decisions:
· One of the major disadvantages of group decision making is that it is more time consuming than the process of individual decision making.
· Group decisions take longer to be finalized since there are many opinions to be considered and valued.
· In case of authoritarian or minority group decision making, the people whose opinions are not considered tend to be left out from the decision making process and hence the team spirit ceases to grow.
· The responsibility and accountability of the decisions are not equally shared in some cases which leads to a split in the group and hence hamper the overall efficiency of the group.
While involved in a group decision making process it is always better to study the advantages and disadvantages of group decisions and hence formulate a group-decision making process that suits your group and gives you the optimum results.
