Dear All,
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU.
This might be a significant question for many of us - are leggings formal or casual? Can they be worn on regular working days in the office?
I kindly request all of you to share your comments so that we can consider making necessary changes to our policies.

Dear Asha,
Whatever the dress may be, it should not distract others (employees, employers, customers, and outsiders).
Whatever the dress may be, it should match the working environment. (Factory workers cannot be permitted to come in loose dresses, i.e., in dhotis, sarees, or salwar with dupattas).
Whatever the dress may be, it should not be odd to others as the employees are forced to wear without their likings. The colors you select should have a pleasant look.
Whatever the dress may be, it should be suitable and accepted by the area (you cannot insist on sarees in Delhi & Punjab, and you cannot insist on Lehanga chunni for Tamil Nadu).
Whatever the dress may be, it must be made of quality dress materials, and it should not be bought in cheap quality cloths; it will fade in due course, and simultaneously the company's name will also fade along with the dress.
When introducing a Dress code, please ensure that the dress should not be worn outside.
Whenever the dress is worn by the employees, they must keep in mind that they are representing the image of the company. So they should be very careful of their behavioral attitude.
Wishing you all the best.
With warm regards,

Dear Asha,
Bhaskar has rightly explained about the dress code. Thanks Bhaskar!!!
An employee is the image of the company outside; hence he/she has to dress according to the standard of the company as well as the designation. It matters many times. For example, when working in a company and clients or third parties come to the office, the first impression would be the cleanliness, layout of the workplace, employees, their dress, and so on. If it is not professionally maintained, then the visitors will have a negative impression.
Leggings – when worn with a kurta, it's formal, but if worn with tops or casual wear, it's casual. So, the dress code does have its importance.

Dear SSA,
You cannot dress like Mahatma Gandhi (Khadi Dress). If you wear it in the office, it will become a significant issue. You have to choose attire according to the office dress code or something that gives you a decent appearance; otherwise, you might end up being a source of amusement to others.

It is management’s intent that work attire should complement an environment that reflects an efficient, orderly, and professionally operated organization. The policy may intended to define appropriate “business attire” during normal business operations and “casual business attire” on weekends.
The Company recognizes the growing popularity of casual business dress and the positive effects of this shift to boost employee morale, improve quality, encourage more open communication and increased productivity, therefore, creating a more comfortable work environment. Therefore, casual business attire will be permitted on weekends. The Company reserves the right to continue, extend, revise or revoke this policy at its discretion.
Enforcement of this guideline is the responsibility of Company management and supervisory personnel.
The key point to sustaining an appropriate causal business attire program is the use of common sense and good judgment, and applying a dress practice that the Company deems conducive to business environment. If you question the appropriateness of the attire, it probably isn’t appropriate.

And also, members, please encourage such discussions, whether small or big. These types of doubts cannot be cleared by any consultants or find solutions in the statutes. A discussion forum like this can only help in making a common and agreed-upon decision.
Please, whoever it is, please don't discourage by asking if this is a big question or important. Asha, you have shown great courage by posting such questions that most of us would hesitate to post, considering what others might think about such questions. Great job...keep going.
Happy New Year to you as well.

As mentioned by nimmi123, threads like these must be attended to by the majority of HR professionals because they cannot be resolved through statutory referrals or standard procedures. These must be created by us based on standards, specific situations, locality, climate, working atmosphere, etc.

Your company's objective in establishing a business casual dress code is to allow our employees to work comfortably in the workplace. Yet, we still need our employees to project a professional image for our customers, potential employees, and community visitors. Business casual dress is the standard for this dress code.
Because all casual clothing is not suitable for the office, these guidelines will help you determine what is appropriate to wear to work. Clothing that works well for the beach, yard work, dance clubs, exercise sessions, and sports contests may not be appropriate for a professional appearance at work.
Clothing that reveals too much cleavage, your back, your chest, your feet, your stomach, or your underwear is not appropriate for a place of business, even in a business casual setting.
Even in a business casual work environment, clothing should be pressed and never wrinkled. Torn, dirty, or frayed clothing is unacceptable. All seams must be finished. Any clothing that has words, terms, or pictures that may be offensive to other employees is unacceptable. Clothing that features the company logo is encouraged. Sports team, university, and fashion brand names on clothing are generally acceptable.
Certain days can be declared dress-down days, generally Fridays. On these days, jeans and other more casual clothing, although never clothing potentially offensive to others, are allowed.
