Dear Seniors
I've worked with a financial services firm and a publishing firm as corporate communications and research person. I want to enter into hr function, and have been trying out opportunities. If I try with a financial services or publishing co for a hr career, they say they prefer hr from IT. So, to get a similar position in hr even with the industries I've worked with is not possible. I tried a junior position. That too, the preference is from IT. So, my queries are:
1. Do I begin from the beginning? ie an entry level hr job with an IT co so that I can learn the tools of the trade?
2. How do I handle the 'contacts' query? ie they call up and ask me if I have applicant database. Do I try to build a database? If so, how can I just like that without working with any company just build a database? Is it alright to just open my linkedin profile and start connecting? is that how it works?
Pl help as I'm at my wits end.

Hi Ashwaryapai,
It's better to don't leave your present job & take this step at once. Have a self-assessment and decide 'are you really an HR person or Finance was better?'
Initially, start studying basic HR concepts (Recruitment, Compensation & Benefits, Labour Management Relations, Motivational Strategies, Workplace Diversity, Training & Development) & procedures and Indian Labour Law, which you can easily find in different sections of 'Citehr'. After a week or two, you would be able to understand the HR terms in the light of your past experience.
Also, you can start reading & understanding job descriptions of different HR jobs.
If you are already familiar with office environment (in any discipline), nobody can consider you a Beginner (even as HR employee).
After progress in Social Media Engines, candidate's database is no more a Big Issue. Yes, you should develop your Linkedin and other professional profiles to enhance your relations & familiarity in job Market.
