Attitude, Behavior, and Culture (ABCs) differ from other areas of business because they represent intangibles that cannot be shifted with conversation alone. Individuals must take it upon themselves to change.
In recent years, organizational culture has remained at the forefront of business concerns, and for good reason. Employees must buy into the mission of an organization and fit with its culture to feel empowered enough to optimize business value. However, before you can think about getting to C, you must take care of A and B first.
Given an example.
Mostly in Industries usage of thinner (chemicals, include mineral spirits, mineral and true turpentine, acetone, naphtha, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), dimethylformamide (DMF), glycol ethers and xylene.) an hzardous substance is being used as cleaning material before painting and components assembly.
The Company has a well written procedure of usage of ‘thinner’ either as prohibited material, or the usage would have been restricted, by writing written procedure or use in emergency procedure with specific non corrosive cloves.
• Still you will find the workmen using thinner on bare hands and wash small components?
• May that reason he might have used similar procedure in the earlier industry?
• May know the thinner is dangerous to human body, following the other workmen and supervisor?
• May be the close of the shift, timings and production pressure to complete the volume in time?
• May not be knowing the procedure which is in safety procedure book, but no one explained to him due to production volume?
• May be a he is a Contract workmen directly engaged on production jobs, and nobody is responsible. The health of Contract Workmen no one is responsible?
• May be a written approval procedure for usage of thinner, which takes too much time and production pressure directs him to do the at risk behavior (knowing very well it is dangerous to health)?
• The non corrosive rubber cloves were not available in the store or one for use was not in a usable condition / dirty or torn. Nobody takes interest in replacing a new one and store may not have a stock?
• The availability of thinner in such a open position or in a corner nobody notices the usage?
• The storage secondary container, storing the thinner drum is stored, has spilled thinner for the workmen to use without following the so called written procedure?
• Earlier company he worked where the thinner was not use, and having known the health hazard, he gets confused in the new company as everybody use thinner, and he would be afraid of asking the question as why?
• Or every workmen at the end of the shift use thinner to clean hands every day, as a culture?
• Still more surprising procedure deviation when you observe if you observe regularly?
For the health of workmen who is responsible? Or during some auditing /or any case of health hazard is reported on any permanent workmen, one fine morning the worker would be penalized with a notice as “ Inspite of repeated instruction and having a written hazardous procedure to be followed, you have been find using thinner ………..resulted in…… “without understanding the background on which the worker was directed to do at risk behavior”. No workmen would wantonly risk his health.
Then the procedure would be strictly followed for a month, and after which every forgotten the incident , and the worker will do the known. at risk behavior for the convenience / and reason known to him.
Where went wrong? And who is responsible for such exposure of health hazard to workmen? You may choose this as a theme. If this makes some interest to you?
