Dear HR leaders,

I. How may an employee claim a refund after TDS deduction for the financial year 2016-17 from their salary?

II. What is the procedure to show exemptions, investments, or other deductions to claim a refund?

III. How and where can an employee approach to claim against the over deduction of TDS from their salary?

IV. What is the time limit to file a claim?

V. What are the documents required for the claim process?

Please provide clarification.

Claiming a Refund for Excess TDS Deduction

Please note that if excess TDS has been deducted for the year 2016-17, only then can the individual claim a "Refund" in the Income Tax Return for that financial year. However, you must first check whether it is refundable. If the deducted TDS is correct as per your income and applicable taxes, then no refund can be claimed.

Clarification of Points

I. An employee may claim the excess deducted TDS by filing the Income Tax Return.

II. The refund can be claimed through the IT Return (no need to approach anywhere; you can file the return online).

III. The last date for filing the IT Return (in the case of individuals) is generally 31st July. You can file the return before that.

IV. The refund will be credited to your bank account (as provided by you in the return). Generally, the refund is credited within two months after filing the online return.

V. No document is required. Your employer will issue Form 16 (TDS deduction details). You have to furnish the details in the respective place provided in the return.

Once more, I would like to clarify that merely TDS deduction is not an entitlement for a refund. Only if excess TDS is deducted (over and above the applicable TDS) can a refund be claimed. For more specific clarification, please share your data on the matter.
