Concerns About Late Working Hours and Safety
I'm posting this on behalf of my friend who is working in a well-known MNC. I feel it's not good to disclose the company name as it may create problems for her. She works hard from morning till evening, with office timings from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Most days, she ends up working till 7:30 PM and starts from there. In her team, she is the only female among all male colleagues who often arrive after 12 PM and work till midnight or even overnight.
After a few days, rumors started circulating that she leaves early, causing an issue. This led to her starting work after 10 PM on multiple occasions. Initially, it was only once or twice a week, but now it has become a regular occurrence, with her often starting work after 9 PM or even 11 PM.
I don't have any issues with working late, but in her team, the lack of cab services is a major concern. While employees can claim taxi expenses by booking their own, it's challenging to find a taxi after 9 PM. The office is located in Tidel Park, which is safe inside but not outside, where incidents of robbery have occurred. Even my friends have fallen victim to theft of wallets and mobile phones. She used to take the local train, but due to the lack of crowd, some men have started following her home. One day, a man misbehaved with her, and she bravely confronted him in public, causing him to flee.
I suggested she quit her job, but she is determined to build her career in this reputable company. I feel helpless, and her parents are worried about her safety returning late at night. It's perplexing that even small software companies provide cab services for female employees at any time, while in her mid-level company, cabs are only provided after 9 PM.
Chennai has been recognized as one of the safest cities in India, but recent months have seen an increase in criminal activities. She raised her concerns with the manager, but colleagues warned her that it might impact her career growth and performance appraisals. Should we advise her to resign, or do you have any alternative suggestions?

The fact that, despite the difficulties faced by the lone female employee due to this relentless work schedule being brought to the management's attention, no remedial measures have been taken so far is indicative of the management's callous attitude. Certainly, it is not a safe workplace to continue working in anymore. The lady may consider quitting this company immediately, as suggested by the original poster. After all, employment is a means of living and not life itself. There is no benefit for a woman in building her career at a job that constantly presents risks to her modesty and personal safety every day.
Before leaving, it would be prudent to submit a detailed letter regarding these issues to the CEO of the company.
