Hi Team, I am working for a startup IT company with 11 employees. A few months back, a labor inspector visited the company and instructed us to update certain statutory registers. One of the registers that needs to be maintained is connected to the Labour Welfare Fund (LWF).

Clarification on Labour Welfare Fund (LWF) Registration

I am seeking clarification – to pay LWF (Tamil Nadu), does the company need to be registered with the Labour office? What is the process for registration? If so, can the allotted number be used for Professional Tax, etc.?

Please reply.

Labour Welfare Fund and Professional Tax are two different and separate subjects. Authorities under both are different, and there is not even any interconnectivity between them.

Understanding Labour Welfare Fund and Professional Tax

The Labour Welfare Fund scheme is formulated for the welfare of industrial laborers in a state. In contrast, Professional Tax is a tax on professions, trades, callings, and employment paid to the State Government.

You need to register your company under both separately. To learn about the registration procedures, you need to approach the respective departments in your locality.
