My name is Surendar. I am pursuing my 2nd year of MSW (HR) at MGC in Chennai. I am feeling anxious about my placement because I will complete my master's in 6 months, and then I need to secure a position as an HR professional in a reputable organization. I have updated my resume on various job portals and connected with professional websites like LinkedIn and Cite HR. Unfortunately, my college does not offer campus placements, but I have gained valuable experience through internships and concurrent fieldwork, focusing on areas such as recruitment, PF transfer, and induction.

Challenges Faced

However, I am facing some challenges:

• Despite updating my resume on all job portals, I have only come across consultancy roles.

• While I am active on professional networking sites like LinkedIn and Cite HR, they have provided me with exposure and knowledge but have not led to job opportunities for freshers.

• I have been dedicated to my internships and concurrent fieldwork, interacting with HR professionals, but job opportunities have not materialized.

• Campus placement is not available at my college.

I am not frustrated but rather anxious about my HR career. I have some questions:

Questions and Concerns

1. What are alternative methods I can explore to seek opportunities?

2. Why do leading employers seem reluctant to consider HR freshers?

3. Why do top companies prefer HR candidates from business schools?

4. How can I secure a position in a reputable organization?

5. Despite my anxiety, I have not lost hope, and my confidence is growing. With these qualities, do you think I can land an HR job in a good organization?

I look forward to valuable responses and have also attached my resume for your reference. Thank you.

Regards,
Surendar

Dear Mr. Surender Visvanathan,

God bless you. I can appreciate your state of mind, having lived with job-searching students for the last 30 years. I want to assure you of one thing: NO ONE STAYS WITHOUT A JOB FOR LONG.

The Challenge with MNCs

The main issue is that everyone wants to join a first-class MNC from day one. The MNCs are not hiring people even with a low first division. Please see your profile. No company gives priority only to IIM and IIT graduates. Every company management knows that they have to pay a lot for graduates of such prime institutions, and not every company can afford it.

Understanding Job Portals

Naukri and Monster are organizations that earn from placing people in jobs. Since they know that you are not available for the next 12 months, they do not take you seriously for now. At the appropriate time, they will consider your file and offer you various jobs. Panicking will not help.

Broadening Job Search

Firstly, remove the job search only in top companies. Please start from any company and learn and grow. Experience is an important factor in the selection process. At this moment, accept the fact that you do not have any practical experience. So, join a small/medium company and gain experience.

Gaining Experience

Take up a part-time job for the third and fourth semesters so that by the time you come out with a degree, MSW, you will have some experience in some matters.

Improving Communication Skills

Communication is a crucial factor. Reading your panic message, one feels that you are not up to the mark in written communication. Please show your write-up to someone to get it corrected and edit your message on the forum. Hope you are struggling to improve your verbal communication. Even the best of communicators keep studying to enhance their communication.

Blessings,

Dr. Ram
