THE DEAD BODY

It was a sad day for the family. Grandfather had passed away. The house was full of relatives from near and far. Friends and acquaintances had also come to pay their last respects to grandfather, who was much revered by one and all.

The family went for the funeral, accompanied by a lot of people. Pia was the second of four siblings among the grandchildren. It was the first time the children had seen a dead body. It was also the first time they had witnessed a human body being consigned to sacred flames as its last rites.

Having come home after the cremation, everyone seemed to be settling down except fourteen years old Pia. The scene of the burning pyre was fresh before her eyes.

The day passed. As it was time for dinner, her two younger brothers asked their mother if they could have roasted chicken for dinner. The eldest sister was quick to hush them up, saying, “Not today, what would the relatives think? You can have it another time, Today we shall all eat simply” But, the two little boys, innocently nagged on ... One elderly lady who was watching the scene intently, happened to be a strict vegetarian. She said, “When their own people die, they go out and burn their bodies. But they bring other dead bodies home and eat them!”

Those words fell like a bombshell on Pia's ears. From that day she decided, “I will never eat a dead body, what if someone were to cook the dead bodies of our loved ones and eat them? When a hen is killed, its family too would be mourning in its memory. And we, lick our fingers and say- Yummy!”.

Sure enough, God created much for man to eat; fruits, vegetables, cereals etc. Why then should we crave for eating the dead? The dead do not tell tales, but if they could, the mortuary in our stomach would be a den for tale tattlers.

I am so glad I am a vegetarian. I tell this story to everyone whenever there is a debate on veg vs. non-veg. I stopped eating non-veg when I was in the second standard; I saw a chicken getting slaughtered, and that was it. Full stop. :)

Hello Vikram,

I am glad to know one more good reason to be vegetarian. Also, I got one more reason to preach to others to avoid chicken, other than bird flu. Hope this message is not seen by KFC and McDonald's. :P :P :P :P

Vikram ji.
Since today onwards I think there will not be any anxiety on this point.
1. God has told the great bird vulture to live on dead bodies.
2.God has told the kite, smaller than vulture, to live on dead bodies as well as preys.
3. God has told the hawk, smaller than vulture and kite, to live on preys only.
4. So also God has said omnivorous Pia to become vegetarian from such and such date and time whatever may be the reason.
In the creation of God one just obeys His command. All arguments are in support of His commands only. Life is a spontaneity.

Hi all,

The post drives the point home, but I really did not like the way it was described. I am a vegetarian and have never liked non-veg a lot. I only eat non-veg if there is no other option or if everyone forces me to, but still, I would not like to put across a message like this! Because I believe that all said and done, non-veg is not bad. It's just that it should be kept in check so that it does not disturb the cycle of life; for example, endangered animals should not be hunted for meals.

I mean, it all depends on the person's way of life. What does one do if it is more like a staple food item, etc.?

Regards,
Pal.

Hi Pallavi, I totally agree with you point. We can’t really force others to do things just because we don’t like doing them. regards Ajay

Pallavi ji,

God has commanded you to be vegetarian, and God has commanded Vikram to post the message in this way. Everyone is responding to the message as God commands them. So all is okay in the empire of God.

Dear Dr. Ji,

God never commands; He guides. The action is yours. Otherwise, He would have acted Himself, not through you. I agree that what Vikram said was not wrong, nor was I. At the human level, there is nothing absolute, only relative.

Cheers,
Pal.

Pallavi ji ! Neither you nor me nor any body else has seen God. It is a matter of inference and perception. I have every regard for your perception. regards
