Dear Professional Friends, Greetings of the day. Could you please clarify my doubt regarding GSLI vs. ESI? My company is covered under ESI, and the employees earning below Rs 15,000 are contributing to the same. Additionally, we are also paying GSLI for all employees, irrespective of their salary.

Eligibility for Claims under ESI and GSLI

My question is, in the event of an employee's death who is covered under ESI, whether their family is eligible for claims under both ESI and GSLI. I have heard from someone that one person cannot claim both benefits. Please clarify this for me.

Thanks in advance.

Regards, Shanmukhappa Alle

Dear Shanmukhappa ji,

Difference Between ESI and GSLI Schemes

The ESI Scheme and GSLI scheme are entirely different, each with distinct objectives. The purpose of both schemes is entirely different.

The ESI scheme is mandatory as per the law, meaning it is compulsory if applicable under the law. On the other hand, GSLI is not mandatory; it is simply an insurance provided by LIC and is a group insurance. ESI cannot be replaced by any other insurance scheme. Additionally, the ESI Corporation cannot reject any claim on the basis that you are covered by another insurance.

I hope I have made it very clear. What you heard is completely wrong.
