Hi,

I would be happy to learn about your achievements in HR as a career. I am conducting an informal survey to write an article for NHRD.

Hi Vinay,

Good to discuss what you have achieved in your profession. Well, I am from a science background, but my experience has always been in public relations. I worked as a counselor/students' administrator. After a gap, when I am back in the market, I see a new term in the market... HR, human resources. Good to hear that.

I have joined a small consultancy as a recruiter, and I have learned a lot, especially studying the psychology of a person: behavior, personality, stability, interests, zeal, attitude. It was not just marketing that was involved - screening the candidates, filtering them, and promoting the client to close their requirement. A lot of convincing, selling the brand, and much social interaction. It was just like sending soap.

When I got into a small firm as an HR in a generalist role, it is entirely different. You are the focal point, starting from preparing job descriptions to policy-making, payroll, leave management, recruitment. It's different. In just one year and 8 months of whole HR and recruiting experience, I have achieved a lot of satisfaction, patience, changed my perception towards the situations, learned how to be bold and assertive, diplomacy, learned to say NO with a smile, learned to understand others' problems, and come out with convincing solutions. It's just like managing a home (family) but here with many kids. Yes, the same resource planning, budgeting, cost-cutting, counseling, empathy, motivating, except for cooking, the rest all are just the same. I STRONGLY FEEL OUR MOTHERS ARE THE BEST HR MANAGERS. Let me not deviate from the topic. YES, I HAVE ACHIEVED A LOT. NOW I HAVE ACHIEVED CITE HR FRIENDS TOO. THEY ALL ARE JUST AMAZING. I am happy with what I am today. That is what all matters in the end.

Dear Vinay,

I completely agree with what Sari says.

Coming to the point, it's been 1.6 months that I'm working with the same company as a core HR person. The company has given me full rights to manage or change procedures and set up new policies. It's more about learning things practically.

Dear Mr. Vinay,

I am happy to know that you are conducting a survey on achievements in HR as a career. Basically, achievement or success is a relative term, and its reference changes from person to person depending on one's point of view.

Speaking about myself, I joined HR & Admin by accident. At that time, I didn't even have formal education. Also, I was not able to speak or express myself in English.

Today, I hold the position of General Manager with a multinational company in Mumbai, with national and international awards to my credit. I have conducted various experiments and successfully implemented HR policies and practices. As a hobby, I develop people (management personnel, MBA, and engineering students) in various skills like business etiquette, etc.

I have come a long way with my hard work and focused efforts. Looking back at my history, I feel that my achievements define my journey.

Hello Mr. Vinay,

A very good topic indeed. I feel everyone in HR would like to be a part of this.

Anyways, I have very similar good experiences as my other friends and especially Sari has narrated. But one more difference I have found myself... that's personal... but still since getting into HR has brought that, I felt the need of mentioning it.

Earlier, I was in a relatively junior post, not knowing very much in detail about HR. I was in a habit of taking a narrow view on most things. But suddenly when I got to join a more responsible and higher post, I felt that I cannot afford to continue like that. I started giving a clearer and broader approach to things. This has helped me a lot to create a very good image, professionally as well as personally too. Now, even my family members have started taking me as a more mature person than I was before and now I feel I can make worthwhile decisions in a much better way.

I have become a better person than before. This is what I feel I have achieved. 😊
