Dear Seniors,
I received information about a part-time executive program in HRM from IIM Lucknow. NIIT will provide support for study circles. IIM Lucknow will provide certification upon completion of the program. I am seeking your guidance on whether this program will be beneficial for my future career. Is there any value in obtaining this certificate in the current scenario? I am considering enrolling in the program and would appreciate your input. Please share your comments. Thank you in advance.

Dear Satish,
The course you are referring to is run by NIIT Imperia, where the award is conferred by IIM Lucknow (Noida campus).
If you're thinking of taking the admission, the only person who can help you is YOU!
Why?
Because no one knows you, your current situation, and your future dreams & ambitions as you do. So, if you want to know whether the course will be helpful in your career, you need to first figure out what it is that you want from your career. Because if you don't get that clarity, then you will be chasing marquee brand courses with the delusion that they will advance your career.
On the surface, any course from the IIM stable will be of help. But, depending on where you are in your career, those advantages will vary. A course will only at best add between 5 - 10% advantage for a candidate. Even a Harvard course will at best get the candidate to an interview. From there on, all that matters is what they've done in their life, their achievements, etc.
So, first figure out what you want your career to be. Assess where you are today in relation to that. Then, do a gap analysis to ascertain what else you need to do to give yourself the best shot within the timeframe you set for yourself. And, if in all this, the IIM course fits in, then you will be crazy for not doing it. And, if it doesn't fit, and you have some spare time & money with you, you will be crazy for not doing it. Because the truth is that only in India do we do courses to further our careers. Elsewhere in the western world, we do courses to learn, become better persons, and live more abundant lives!

Dear Mr. Gaurang,
Thank you for your valuable reply. I'm working as an HR Manager in a Pvt. Ltd. company and want to build a career with a big brand. I have gone through the program structure and contents, and it will definitely be helpful for me to upgrade my knowledge. I just want to understand the value of an IIM part-time course certificate. Because, when conducting interviews with candidates, sometimes we do not consider correspondence or part-time courses. It's just a certificate/degree, and it does not hold the same value as a full-time course. So, my concern is whether this applies to an IIM certificate as well.
I appreciate any insights you can provide on this matter.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

Dear Satish,
Like I hinted in my previous reply, you are the best person to judge the value of that course for yourself.
Personally, I would do the course if I liked its content and believed it would add real value to my existing knowledge.
The fact that you are an HR Manager to me means that a part-time course from an IIM can only bring advantages. But if your performance record as an HR Manager is at or below par, then the added advantages of the course will definitely be diluted.
I am getting the feeling that you are expecting the course to be a magic wand for your career. What I am trying to tell you is that that is not the case. The magic wand is your performance and achievements in your current job. The course will only add some amount of fairy gold dust like icing on the cake. Just as you wouldn't buy a cake simply for its icing, your career will neither be magically enhanced nor abruptly stopped if you did or did not do the course.
And don't worry about your organization's current hiring practices. To me, they seem myopic and ill-advised. Remember, the best talent continually upgrades its knowledge. And because almost always they are in full-time employment, the only option they have is part-time courses to do. So if you want to further your career with BIG BRANDS (using your words), then speak to their HR managers and acquaint yourself with their hiring processes and decision-making criteria.
I believe I've given you ample food for thought as well as a considerable veiled solution to your supposed dilemma.
And if you're still not sure, simply implement the Nike slogan - 'Just Do It.'
Good Luck!
