Dear Somdatta,
It appears that you have a serious misconception regarding "succession planning." By asking for some software or an Excel sheet, it appears that you are treating this major organizational intervention on par with the account department's petty cash handling.

Thank you for the reply, but I definitely have this amount of knowledge that it is not the account department's petty cash handling job (though cash handling is not at all a petty job and neither is any job petty). However, I have come across many organizations and also some of my HR friends (who are also using this website) who are using succession planning software.
Anyways, my question remains open - if anybody can help me with any system to generate succession planning.

Dear Somadatta,
Kindly go to Google and choose your pick. It would always be useful if we could give details of what we do and at what level of succession we are considering, etc.
Have a nice day.

Dear Mr. Somdatta Neogi,
Succession planning is not an easy task. It's not just about "promoting an employee to the next level," but about "why and on what grounds you want to promote an ex-employee to the next level, followed by, is he the desired candidate equipped with all the skills to manage the elevated role?"
You have to study much more than normal in all those individuals who may be considered for succession planning. One single wrong move, decision, or selection can cost the organization and demotivate the right candidate who was left behind.
Do study carefully the job description (must be defined) of the designation/position and correlate it with the skills, talent, and competencies of candidates considered for succession planning.
With profound regards,
