Dear HR folks, I joined an IT company as an HR executive in September. I am currently being paid 5k per month, but in the offer letter, they mentioned that after confirmation, I would be paid 10k per month. Now, after completing 6 months, they are telling me, "We have confirmed your position, but we will pay you only 5k for the next 3 months." They assured me of a salary raise during the appraisal.

I am now unsure of what to do. I have a commitment period of 18 months, and if I resign before that, they will not provide me with a relieving letter. Should I resign from the job and look for a new one, or should I address this issue with management and ask for my rights?

I am feeling deeply frustrated. Please help me navigate this situation.

Dear Vijay, Thank you for your valuable suggestion. Will this affect my career? They are supposed to send a confirmation email by April 22nd, 2011. I haven't received the email yet. I am waiting for the confirmation mail. I have reminded my supervisor three times, but there has been no response from his side as well. Since I have a commitment period of 18 months, if I switch my job now, they will not provide a proper relieving letter to me. How can I tackle this issue?

Dear Balachandar, I would suggest you go through your contract or offer letter once again and figure out the point mentioned regarding your probation period. In my knowledge, the probation period is meant for confirmation only, not for any increment unless something special you have done for the organization. This may be your first job; please check if you are learning HR concepts. If you are learning, please spend at least 9 months as a minimum. This is the minimum period to understand your organization and your capabilities for that firm. If you are still not progressing and have some good options, please consider switching to another organization.

Dear Balachandar, as you were told by your HR personnel, wait for the next 3 months and see if your salary is not increased. Then, notify your reporting manager about the terms to which you and our company have agreed. If you don't get your salary increased as you were told, then try for another job that suits you. Meanwhile, learn about the HR process and gain knowledge. If you have knowledge related to your subject along with experience, you will find many jobs very easy.

I understand your concern; my empathy is with you. See, when they promised you a hike after 6 months, which actually became a false statement, think logically. How can you trust them to give you a hike after another 3 months of work?

I suggest you go for the second option (another company). First of all, update your resume on the portal, and in your resume, mention the facts of why you are looking for a change. This might help employers understand your current situation, and those employers will only contact you if they are comfortable with your terms and conditions.

Then start attending interviews, and even in telephonic or in-person (F2F) interviews, kindly clarify every detail to the interviewer regarding the relieving letter. Suppose you can produce current salary slips; that could be an advantage for you. If everything goes well, then hand in your resignation at your current organization. As far as I know, you have to serve a 15-day notice period in the probation period.

Note: Quit the current company only once you have another company offer in hand.

I am not saying that what I am saying is perfect, but if I were in your place, I would do the same as what I have written here.

I agree with Siraj. But be careful in the next negotiation to make things crystal clear. There are hidden contracts too. It is not always necessary that the promises they provide during the interview will be fulfilled, especially the verbal ones. Also, ask them when the next appraisal period is so that you can be prepared accordingly.
