I surprised implies that you actually did the surprising. I was surprised, implies that something, or someone surprised you

Sparky should have continued to say that both are incomplete sentences without an object.

When my daughter came and told me that she got engaged, I was surprised to find that I had been kept in the dark.

I surprised him (my father) when I said that we had become grandparents.
