Whenever you sneeze, people around you invariably say, 'God bless you!' Even in Andhra, people utter, CHIRANJEEVA, and in Russia, people say, 'Budet, dzarovoe!' meaning, be healthy. Wishing the person who sneezes to be healthy is a common practice worldwide. But why? Yes, there is a great secret behind it.
Whenever a person sneezes, their heart, which doesn't stop for even a single moment in their lifetime, stops for a tiny fraction of a second. So, people around them wish for their heart to keep beating and for the whole body to resume working after this momentary pause. This practice of wishing well to a sneezer has been happening since time immemorial.
You should never, ever try to stop a sneeze as it can be quite dangerous. Stopping a sneeze may damage nerves in the brain or neck.

Yes, you are right! "God Bless" is a way of blessing the person! Actually, I once read another explanation in a book which goes like this:
During the sixth century, there was a plague in English countries. When the Pope ascended to the papacy, his successor died due to the plague. He then passed a law that everyone should say "God Bless" to whoever sneezes, thus blessing them. This was because sneezing then indicated that the person was suffering from the plague and asking God to bless them with life!
