Hi all,

In an interview, I was asked this question: "The Trade Unions are not as effective today as they were. (I was not asked whether you agree to it or not) What are the reasons you think have diluted the effectiveness of Trade Unions today??" Can anyone tell me what I should have said?

Regards,
Neeta

Hi Neeta,

There are several reasons for the dilution of Trade Unions in our country. Firstly, the Government Policies do not favor Trade Unions due to corrupt practices. Secondly, in most manufacturing industries, one can notice that the laborers have been hired from various contractors. Also, many IT and BPOs do not approve the policy of Trade Unions, and in most sectors, the work is either outsourced to another agency or done through contract labor. In either case, the workers working for a particular company are not on the payrolls of the company.

Thirdly, in the present scenario, the Trade Unions have to equip themselves with knowledge rather than holding the industry to ransom through strikes or forcing Management for layoffs or lockouts.

I have shared a piece of my knowledge with you.

Thankyou Mr.Raghunath. What about large factories that still have many skilled and unskilled workers on their payrolls (i.e not contracted) like Century Rayon or Tata motors???

Hi Neeta,

One of the reasons for the issue, in my perspective, is the multiplication of trade unions in the same industry. The strength of a trade union rests in its members' unity. If the trade unions are multiplied, they lose their bargaining power because the members are divided among many unions.

Another reason is the excessive political influence over the trade unions.

The trade unions are failing to act promptly.

Thank you.
