Hi Tania,
Nice question you have raised, "Why HR?"
In my view, HR is the only department which portrays the company objectives in terms of policies and vision. Every organization has a well-trained and experienced HR department. HR helps in the projection of future business developments. HR makes employees feel that they are a part of the organization. HR creates an environment like a family, providing a comfort zone. The HR department is designed for the organization and for employees. HR acts as a recruiter, cost center, organization developer, manpower projection, and budget projector. HR helps organizations perform at their best by providing the right person for the right job. HR designs the company limitations, structure, policies, and if required, redesigns them. Stating that a firm is employee-friendly truly means HR is cooperative. HR maintains trustworthy relationships with employees to make the workplace comfortable. HR maintains the existing resources of the organization and strives to use them efficiently. HR introduces the best possible incentives and acts as motivators for many employees. HR also keeps track of the company's progress and that of its employees.
So, in all these ways, HR is important and is an integral part of any organization, playing a vital role in the company's success.
Hope that you would agree on that.

Hi Tania!
HR is the intellectual asset of the company. The other resources will remain unproductive or less productive if they are not properly handled by HR. HR is the only resource of a company that competitors can't copy. It is the only resource that can synergize to give output that is much more than the sum of its parts.

Hi,
HR is the lifeblood of an organization. If we imagine a body without blood, then nothing can exist. HR makes employees feel like the company is their home. Despite having a lower pay package themselves, HR professionals know the expectations when recruiting technical personnel. During tough times, HR plays a crucial role in keeping employees motivated. HR makes each day more interesting, and employees look to HR with hope.

Rohit

Hi Tania,
In simple terms, HR is like the brain of any company. Just as our human body is controlled by our brain, similarly, the company is governed by the HR Department. If the brain stops functioning, then the whole body also stops functioning. All successful individuals in the world have a good head/brain on their shoulders. Similarly, all successful companies have a well-functioning HR Department. Therefore, you should be proud to be a part of the HR Department. However, ensure that nobody raises a finger against the HR Department.

Dear All,
First of all, though I am in HR, I simply don't understand the reason for asking such questions (like why HR, why Marketing, why Finance). If a person is in any field, it can be either because he is interested in that area or it was a choice he made as there were no other options available. In any case, what actually matters is his knowledge in that specific area and his willingness to do that job.
Another concern is these questions are so obvious that anyone who goes for an interview prepares for such questions. So what is the reason one should ask such a question? Hope you agree with me. Even if not, kindly let me know so that if I am wrong, at least that will change my perception and I will also start asking this question to my candidates.
Warm Regards, Urmila Dehad

Hi Taniya,
Whenever somebody asks you WHY HR, just remind them it's the HR who brought you into the organization. It's the HR who takes care of you and your family by providing all the benefits (salary & perks) on time. No other department bothers to look into such matters. It's HR who keeps employees happy and motivated all the time by arranging events for them. It's only HR that brings the best talent of the market into the organization. HR is the blood and backbone of any organization.

Hi employees are the valuable assets to every organization and they are handled by the HR. Machines, though they work for the company, are desireless and emotionless, but human beings have both desires and emotions, and managing them is a challenging task. Only a good HR person can handle them and get work from them for the growth of an organization as well as the growth of an employee.
Dear All,
For me, why HR? Human Resources is the "management" of the most important resource, i.e., humans.
Recruitment – How can the company run without having good and competent employees?
Payroll – Working on attendance management, salaries, and keeping them confidential.
Training – Development of employees to support the organization to face the competitive edge. Training and development have been one of the key areas of reducing attrition.
Generalist – The mother of the organization! Taking care of all aspects required for the employee.
Welfare Officer – Organizing recreation programs to keep employees happy and comfortable in their second home, i.e., the office.
As rightly said by one of our friends, HR is the blood that runs energy through it, to all parts of the body so that they can work together to make the body whole.
I am very happy to choose HR as my profession.

Ur right Urmila... Why ask such a question?? Well, the recruiter also knows that the candidate must have selected a field because he/she was interested in it, or probably because he/she had no other choice (meaning no interest in any of the fields). The basic purpose of asking why HR, Finance, or Marketing is to know how much you can justify your position now that you are already in the field and wish to make a career. Well, this question, I guess, is asked only to freshers (correct me if I'm wrong)... and I have seen many times that people take up HR because they find they have less IQ for Finance and Marketing (Sales) is not their cup of tea... Not true for all... but yes for many.

HR is the backbone of any organization and it portrays the quality of people in the organization. Employees are the assets of an organization. For the proper upkeep of the plant, we regularly water, put fertilizers, etc. Likewise, HR nurtures the employees in various ways to make them bigger and better in the organization. HR conducts various in-house and external trainings for employees for their skill enhancement and knowledge, which in turn results in the achievement of organizational objectives. HR is, in fact, the face of an organization.

Hi,
Question back: Why not HR? The answer would be just the opposite of all replies.
I would like to give an example. Think a man is standing on a riverbed. There is a river, and he has to cross the river to reach the other side, which leads to a road. Ask him how he would cross the river.
Definitely, he would give one of the below answers:
1) Swim - pros & cons: To swim, one must know swimming, and it's most dangerous to swim.
2) Take a boat - There must be a boat in the first place and a person to row, and again, it's not so safe.
3) Write a petition to the government to build a bridge, etc. - Who knows when the bridge will be constructed; it might take some time.
Exactly what I am trying to tell you is HR is like a river that gives the potential of a bridge being constructed, to sharpen your learning skills like swimming and helps as a liaison between the employer and service taker, like the boat where people with various intentions come together for a single purpose, which is to cross a bridge.
Finally, what I wanted to tell is people ask "Why HR?" instead of asking which way to cross the river. Understand you can never tell why a river and then why crossing it. Similarly, no one can question why HR.
Please excuse me if I was wrong...

Hi,
HR has become one of the critical functions in today's organizations. The HR department was earlier considered a department to maintain the muster roll, comply with statutory requirements, and carry out welfare activities. There has been a shift from physical strength to intellectual capacity, and organizations have realized that HR can add value to the organization. Today, every manager dealing with people is essentially an HR manager. The HR department can provide support to other functions and is now seen as a value creator for the organization.

HRD is needed by any organization that wants to be dynamic and growth-oriented or to succeed in a fast-changing environment. It grows only through the efforts and competencies of their human resources.

Hi Tania,
Simple: Why do you need HR in the organization?
To make sure other employees (top talent) continue remaining in the organization.
HR is like the "Lady of the House." The option cannot be ruled out. You have a remote or a switch to make a machine work. In an organization, the HR department is required to make people work. If you neglect your machines, costs increase, and they stop working. Likewise, if you neglect the HR department that clearly focuses on employee issues, people also stop working.

Dear Urmila,
It is a valid interview question. You will get to know how true the person is in his/her passion towards HR. It will help you understand their view of what HR is.
You know why I state this is important... just because I got the following weird answers for this question during an interview:
a) "Uhmmm... uhmm... I like HR."
b) "Well, HR is taking care of employees. And I always loved taking care of people - you know I am good at it."
c) "I was not good at any specific subject, and my friend told me I can do HR. It's easy."
d) "I don't know. I thought girls find HR job easier."
e) "I want to prove to the world that I can do anything."
These are answers I will never forget. I was interviewing a candidate for an HR Assistant job.

Hi, Urmila,
I completely agree with you. I am in the HR profession, and I face this question every time, and it gets so irritating. I am a B.Com graduate, and I specialized in HR. I have opted for HR just because I had no other option. To be frank, I don't know anything about HR, but now I really feel proud of myself saying that I am in HR. However, if I give the same reply to the interview, they will reject me, or else on top of that, they'll ask a hundred and one questions. In the end, I get a caption like "I have no planning about my future."
I don't know why people ask this question regularly.

Purpose of asking this question is - "we definitely do not want to hire people who have no self-direction and make choices out of what appears in front of them."
Imagine you both have a huge team to handle.
Let's keep it this way: It's a marketing assignment. Both of you belong to competitor brands, for FMCG products.
Now you both have the top places in the market...and all of a sudden the advertising/Brand Manager quits!
You guys have a need to hire that person immediately because you want to launch a new product, and it's going to be a huge competition, and success is only based on the advertisements.
Now, if you have 3 candidates to choose from, and one of them gives you an answer "I don't know why I took this role... I did not find any other..." will you hire him/her?
Won't you be interested in having a member who LOVES and KNOWS what he/she is doing? You will...
So no harm if you guys have reached this point, where you just chose to be in HR with no specific reasons. I would suggest you learn about the field and see what interests you. If you have no planning in life, it's dangerous... it's not late to start right away too!
Good luck to you guys!
