Of course U should inform your boss even if the person is your close friend. DUTY comes first in any case.
But before this just confirm whether the news is true & it must not be a rumour. Take tehj person into confidence & try and find out y he/she wants to leave

Hi All,

First of all we as HR should have a great rapport with all HODs and employees also, we should be in a position to get the information that the employee is uncomfortable with his job, should initiate the discussion with the employee and as well as the HOD, there is no wrong in sharing the information with the HOD because all the information what you get may not be right but alerting the people is not at all wrong.

I agree it is very difficult to get the information but it is not difficult. As a HR guy you should be prepared with successors and have an eye on the guy who is planning to leave.

There are occassions where we have arrested the issue even the employee is scheduled to attend the interview, this can be possible with your rapport, each one of the employee will surely have one or two close friends and without discussing with them they even forward their resumes also hence if your efforts are high it's not a herculous task.

Tea points, smoking zones, gettogether places, lunch rooms, library, parking slots, in the common company transport etc., are the right places to obtain the information.

Hi
Definitely u need inform regarding that, if he has informed you formally. if he has not informed you formally then that's your wish to convey the message to your boss. Suppose you had informed your boss regarding the departure of staff , who has not informed you formally, then you will be in trouble if your boss asks the particular person and the person refuses the same. be careful in this.
thanks & regards

Hi,

The solution to this is you can introduce an employee Band System which will signify you the probable attrition rate in comming months and you can always be prepared with preventive steps to take.

Employee Band System:

Here you can diversify employees into Red, Green and Yellow.

Red Employees are those who have enough experience in your organization and have ample of opportunities in outer world with better packages than yours, and also the employees who are underpaid but skilled and the employees who are not stable in their thoughts. They always have second thought of leaving if the time and opportunity permits.

You can do one thing to them is providing additional Executive benefits and flexiblity to work or favourable work conditions.

But there is always a chance of leaving.

Green band Employees are those who are happy for now but due to change in your strategies or anticipated changing conditions in future they may leave the organization.

You can councell them always and can keep them satisfied.

Yellow band employees are those who are newly joined as well as with lot of enthusiasm to grow in the same organization. they are harmless to attrition. but should keep a track.

for your question you can put those employees who are attending the interviews into red band and take session to know the reason and to curb it.

This Banding system will always be helpfull in tracking the attrition beforehand.

Suggestions / comments please

This is a tricky issue.
Now a days even employees working for good employers and who are apparently satisfied keep applying and attend interviews. Not necessarily they will leave the job.
I feel before you inform your boss you should be sure that employee is leaving for sure.
You need to have good rapport and proper communication with boss to communicate such things. You also need to know your boss well for this.
As rightly pointed out by someone, you should not be instrumental in spreading rumors. I came across a case where there was a very strong rumor about a senior manager leaving the company and this information was fed all the way to the top management also, but nothing happened for six months and poor fellow lost his reputation and increment also.
Thanks & Regards
