Hello,

I need an advice from all senior and experienced members here especially those from IT/software field.

I want to get job as a Software Developer. This is my story...

I am 34 years, male. I completed my graduation in 2000 as a MECHANICAL engineer (BE Mechanical). After that I worked as a 'Consultant' in Silverline Technologies Ltd., Mumbai, from January 2002 to May 2002. Though Silverline is a IT organization, it was not a software project. Me along with several others were removed from Silverline as they were not having any projects due to slowdown during that time. After that in January 2004 I started my own small computer institute. However, in June 2008 I had to close it down as I incurred a lot of losses. Since then (from July 2008) I am working as a Lecturer on adhoc (contract) basis in an Engineering college.

During January 2000 to December 2001 and June 2002 to December 2003 either I was unemployed or I did jobs not even worth mentioning (though I tried a lot to get a good job as a Software Developer). I did not have any appointment letter and experience certificate from the companies I worked during this period. Due to financial problems it was and it is not possible for me to be unemployed for longer time.

To make long story short, I never was able to get that elusive job as a software developer.

Can I get job NOW at my age of 34 as a software developer? I am especially worried because of my age as some of my friends in software field have said that at my age I should have been a Project Manager. I am good in Java, JSP, Servlets. I know I have made a mess of my career. But now I am determined to make amends.

Thank you.

Dear Herambh,
if you are really capable of developing software then sure you will get job because engagement of people matter with quality of work and capabilities and not age as even if software developer is 100 years old and he can do the job better will be given first preference.

Hello Herambh,

Hope things are going well.

As a friend I want to suggest view things....please take in positive....

First you come out that your life is over, still their is more to do..... (be optimistic), being B.E graduate & matured find out your weakness and try to come out of them, I know its difficult but you need to think more on this.... having an experience as a lecturer and consultant find out the other alternatives where they can helps you in your bright future.

Find out some good course, which are related to your areas of interests in the IT domain, but choice the right vertical (now its not the time for doing research this or that like fresh graduate), when you are consulting any training institute see what the max uplift can be provided by the trainer/institute.

What I feel is, as you said that you are good with Java, JSP, Servlets.... there are course like Pega, Vignette... where their is more demand for these courses the candidates were taken as hot cakes.....

or

Do certifications like PMP, PMO, ERP.....

As said by Shivakuti update your profile in all the job portals, before that get prepare your CV in a professionally and upload the update on.... (take an advise from expert while preparing the CV/profile)

ALL THE BEST, I WISH YOU A GOOD FUTURE AHEAD (Professionally & Personally)

One should always try before coming to conclusion do make efforts but yes experience and age matters in the corporate world. Incase you need a job in a particular field you need to show experience and prove your worth, for you it wont be an easy tasks out of 100 application you would send the chances would be less than 3%. But dont give hope and keep on trying you never know what might click at any given time..luck also plays a cruitial role in life....but yes chances and opportunities would be very very very low and if you have the capabilities turn them around for yourself...

Hi Herambh,

Please keep this is mind: The more you think about the negative aspects that surround your opportunity, the lesser you see the opportunity.

The issue will not be a problem, unless you see it as a problem.

There are more facts that concern your selection into a good job, other than the AGE. Fine tune yourself to the position you are hunting for. If that calls for additional skills development, see the best way that it can be gained.

Presentation matters! Communication matters. Communication does not mean just flawless language, but the positive self image you carry with yourself and the way you put it across in front of others. Concentrate on your skills and how better you can present yourself. Carry appropriate material that talks about your skills (Its not just enough you dream and long to be there - but you also need the knowledge that takes you there)

Your problem here is AGE. You can not do anything about it, buut yes - you an grow more older by worrying about it. Feel young! Feel good about yourself!

Everyone has a rough patch in life, that does not make u look miserable unless we prefer to do so. What matters is the confidence to keep going inspite of all things that keep happening in life. Life is just 10% of what happens to you, and the 90% of what you make out of what happens to you! ;-)

Stay positive and cheerful!

Life has got more than just this small number "34"!!

Dear Herambh,
You are just 34, nothin to worry. I wud say, hereafter keep ur steps in a rgt path. Plan yourslf n never evr give up. Today's market scenario is, employers look for professionals, so make urslf professional, yes, equip yourself. You have to take up the course as suggested by Mr. Venugogal, do certification and that is very important. To my knowledge, you could opt for DOT NET (. NET) course with Microsoft certification which costs your 50k. So, wake up Herambh, time has come, get ready for the RACE....Keep rockin........

Dear Herambh,
It happens. It happened with me as well. I mean, there comes a time when you realise that 'you are caught in a wrong job'. But then, as advised by the learned members here, stay positive - that's the only thing which can make things good for you.
Additionally, I would suggest that you keep some softwares developed in you bag. They do not have to be comprehensive, but just like Trailers of a Movie. I'm sure by now you must have a fair idea what corporates want. At the time of interview find an opportunity to show a demo of those to the Interviewer - that will give you an edge over others.
Good luck and all the best!
