Hi Sujata...
I think this is more a question of self awareness...Employee should take care of thier things...
Let's suppose you are travelling in train and your belongings are lost in the way.That doesn't mean the railways authorites will compensate for this loss,rather you who should take care of your things in any where...
To be more careful you can refrain it by security checking and by bringing more awareness

My feeling is that the company is not to be held responsible. While I agree that it happened in the workplace and all that, the employee must take care of his/ her belongings.
I think, most companies have policies regarding usage/ carrying of mobiles in their office anyway. just recheck what your policy says.
The post says that the peon saw it on the table, and the next day it was not there. how do we conclude that someone else took the mobile. The employee himself/herself may have retreived the mobile and then misplaced it somewhere else.
IT would not be right to accuse someone else (office cleaning staff etc etc) of theft, without proper evidence.

HI Sujatha .. one thing u have to realise the mobile is lost and not stolen or thefted .. being in India .. we cant expect everyone to be honest .. everyone is looking for some chances ... my father used to say .. even it is 5 paisa or 5 laks dont take other people money .. some may think what will happen it is just one rupee we can take others may think ya this is big amt .. ... ok i am boring .. .. coming to matter the person who lost the mobile didnt realise that he lost the mobile .. if he realised he would have contacted the office ..if anyone seen my mobile .. so it is his fault only..

dear Sujata,
Irrespective of what is the result of investigation, i personally feel the employee who lost is the one who is responsible. As this is his responsibility to safeguard an asset thats been given by the compony and thus the ownership of the situation should be by the employee and not by anyone else. A thorough investigtion will lead to avoidance of such situation in future and people being vigilant .So ownership has to be by the employee himself.
