Swetha,
You could collect his passport size picture and get his portrait done by an artist. This you can frame it and gift it, if you are keep on a material gift. I would also suggest what Babsi has suggested. But i feel if you all together wish him cheerfully and could invite his spouse for cake cutting ceremony, that would equally be a great gift.

Dear Swetha
You would have already had photographs of serval occassions where your CEO interacted with you your team mates, or your department associates, other department associates, management meetings, interaction with guests, like-wise many other events, occassion, etc. Collect those photographs, choose the best ones and make a collage in a large frame (all in one frame of A3 size ) and present it with a bouquette and a small tiny synthetic cake with the year of celebrations. These moments will be cherished, whenever he sees it on his table in office or at home.
Thanking you in advance...

Dear Sheetal

There is no fixed policy for the celebrations of Birthdays of Staff, it all depends on the organisation values and staff welfare policies if any framed. There are organisations, which would send a birthday greetings (must) and a dining coupon as birthday gift (an option). Call the department people and cut a cake if it is department-wise celebrations with some refreshments before breaking for the day, while gifting a birthday greeting card with all the department colleagues/associates sign-up. Another way is boss taking the birthday guy or girl to dinner with both the family members included on the same day or a day before or after if the birthday falls on any holiday. Or a group birthdays can be celebrated, like - for all those born in the same month cut one cake on the Last Working day of the month, or if is department-wise celebrations, once is every three months for all those whose birthdays fall in that quarter. Choose any week-end for the celebrations, so that they can carry fresh feelings with them.

All these celebrations can happen with the budget allocation to each department or division or linefunction, group, team, etc., keeping in view the no. of associates/employees/colleagues.

Special care need to be taken not to differentiate any colleague/associate/employee. A trust is build among every associate if no differences are shown in the celebrations without any bar.
