M/s stands for Messrs (plural of Mister). It is how we address any man or woman for salutation. Just like us, a company or organization also has a life cycle. It comes into existence when established, and ceases to exist when it is shut down.

You r partially right. Messers is applied only when a company’s name has a proper noun in it as the first word. Like M/s. Anil & Co. and not in Standard Printers Co.

Understanding 'M/s' in Company Names

'M/s' is the short form of 'Messrs', which is the plural of Mr. (Mister). It is normally used for addressing a firm. This usage probably started when there were no companies (Pvt. Ltd. or Ltd.) and only firms (partnerships) were formed by a group of more than one person. Hence, to address the group of persons who formed the firm, the term 'M/s' became popular, e.g., M/s Ram & Co.

Hello Everyone, this is my first ever post on this webpage, although I have been reading your posts, etc., and it has been useful many times. Coming back to the above question, "M/s." is used for a proprietorship company, not for a Pvt Ltd or Public Ltd company. I learned this while working with a Chartered Accountant.

Hope this information helps you all.
