Dear Colleague,

The word "nomination" is defined as "to appoint or propose for appointment to an office or place" according to Webster's Dictionary. Essentially, a person who is alive can nominate their family members to receive certain benefits in the event of their death or demise. Therefore, nomination can only be carried out by a member of the Provident Fund who is alive. In essence, nomination is a document that can only be completed by a member when they are alive.

However, if a member did not make a nomination while alive, the alternative document accepted by the EPFO for the settlement of Provident Fund (PF), Employee Pension Scheme (EPS), Employee Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI), etc., is the Legal Heirship Certificate issued by the Revenue Department of the respective State Government. The process is carried out based on the Legal Heirship Certificate in the absence of a valid nomination.
