Hi, I am Vishal, an MBA in HR, global management, and marketing. Currently, I am working as a business development manager in a consultancy firm. However, I have many opportunities for an HR role in a software firm. The dilemma I face is that while business development is considered a mid-level job, it also offers more scope than HR. Can you advise me on which field I should choose?

What choice kicks you the most...what causes dreams to form, what causes more smiles... It may not be more money or more fame, it may have hurdles... but if the first few questions give you an answer towards a choice, choose that.

Hi Vishal,
I would say that the opportunities in both software and consultancy firms are tremendous. Based on my experience, working in the software industry would provide you with more exposure and knowledge towards business development in various fields or platforms as you will be involved right from the initial stage of project initiation and implementation. On the other hand, in a consultancy firm, your job is limited to the assignments given to you.
In terms of growth levels, software companies would offer you numerous opportunities to interact with direct clients and may even send you to different geographical locations if you are truly dynamic in showcasing your performance. I'm not saying that consultancy firms will not provide such opportunities, but they might be more limited compared to software firms.
There are plentiful career growth opportunities in Business Development these days. Anyway, I am sure you will make the right decision. Take care.

Hey Vishal, I forgot to mention one more thing. You will have amazing incentive programs (which sometimes are more than your salary) if you choose business development as your career. Most companies will have good incentive plans for BD.
