Hi,
I remember a story which I came across somewhere about 10 years ago. I can't recall whether I heard it or read it, but I would like to share it with all of you.
An organization needed to fill a position for an art designer and announced the vacancy. Out of 55 candidates who applied, 2 candidates were shortlisted and were sent letters for the final selection process. The letter instructed the candidates to submit a good, quality, efficient, and innovative design or painting, which would ultimately determine the chosen candidate.
The first candidate submitted a beautiful painting that was very eye-catching. However, the second candidate only sent a written letter without including any painting or design.
Surprisingly, the management decided to select the second candidate. The offer letter was issued, and the candidate joined the organization.
Guess what might have happened. Why was the second candidate chosen over the first? What could be the moral of this story?

The letter, when viewed differently, showed an artistic form. That may be the reason.Something novel which revealed his creativity

The management selected the second candidate because of his focus on the organization's mission rather than artistic painting. Management always looks at your creativity in connection to your work, not anything else. Most likely, the second candidate emphasized his role in contributing to the organization's mission and his dedication to his work.

He might have written that I could not make design/painting for your organization until I am working with my present employer; it shall be considered a breach of the code of conduct if I were to do so. That is why he was selected because management always seeks dedicated and trustworthy candidates for their organization.

Hi,
Art designing is not only about sketching and painting things beautifully as you see them in real-life situations. Arranging words and playing with language is also a form of art designing. The second candidate did the same thing; he wrote only a few lines in the form of a letter but arranged the words in such a manner that it might have been no less than an art design.
Thanks!

I think he was selected because the company wanted to groom him to follow the company and its clients' path rather than his own. People who follow their own path are ambitious and would want a lot more from the company. If they don't get it, they would leave. The first candidate would be a short-term investment.

In his letter, it has been quoted that:
"If this letter is being read by you, I hope I have succeeded because my designing is so worthy and lively that even the postal department has not recognized that the stamps pasted on this cover are not original and have been designed and painted by me."
So the company has considered the following and selected the candidate for:
- Creative thinking
- Innovation
- Skills
- Sportive, and so on...
Thanks & Regards
