  • Hi Jiah,

You are right. It's related to a manufacturing firm, but these days, a lot of other sectors like education, hospitals, etc., are also applying this practice in their system. 5S basically comes under TQM (Total Quality Management).

  • Hi M surendra,

5S originated from Japan. In India, we can refer to it as CANDO:
    - Seiri
    - Seiton
    - Seiso
    - Seiketsu
    - Shitsuke

    In India, it translates to:
    - Cleanliness
    - Arranging
    - Neatness
    - Discipline
    - Organizing

Here, I am sending you the PowerPoint presentation for 5S carried out in Asian Paints.

    Jiah....

Don't take this personally, but you do need to put in work for this presentation and not wait for 'spoon-feeding'. People will try to help you here but will be unable to hand-hold. It is OK to make mistakes, but you will need to create some original content; that is the only way you get better.

    Good luck

Jiah, with all these inputs given by our esteemed members, if you are still unsatisfied with them, I suggest you to go back to your mentor, project guide, or the professor and seek information from them. You will get to know the basic definitions or the actual 5S of HR, and from there on, you can start your research, taking them as the base.

    Jiah,

These attachments, though related to manufacturing, require you to understand the concepts of 5S.

You can apply this methodology to your files and folders (both physical and digital) in a systematic manner. For instance, consider implementing a naming convention for your files and sorting them in a similar way. If you use presentations or other data representation applications, standardize them and create templates to avoid spending time daily creating them from scratch. Even tagging and flagging your emails constitute sorting and systematic arrangement.

Don't limit yourself by merely reviewing the PowerPoint presentations and other information provided here. Consider different perspectives. Good luck! :icon1:

    Hi Jiah,

If you don't mind, if your ideas are clear regarding 5S, then it's easy to implement as well as to prepare a presentation on the same. I am sending a .pdf file here, which I hope is helpful for you. Though it's manufacturing-related, it involves the HR department too.

Basically, you need to note down your activities like file handling, system handling, etc. I hope you understand.

    Warm regards,
    Surendra Shettigar

  • Dear All,

The answered post might be correct, but for any manufacturing industry, the 5S concept is as follows:
    1) Sort.
    2) Set In Order.
    3) Shine.
    4) Standardize.
    5) Sustain.

I hope this will provide us with more information on the same.

5S is basically a Japanese practice. It was first used in the manufacturing sector, but now you can apply it in any department. This concept is closely related to lean manufacturing or management.

    Sort: Clearing the work area
    Set in Order: Designating locations
    Shine: Cleanliness & workplace appearance
Standardize: Everyone doing things the same way
Sustain: Ingraining the 5S's into the culture

  • 5S is a system to reduce waste and optimize productivity through maintaining an orderly workplace and using visual cues to achieve more consistent operational results. It derives from the belief that, in the daily work of a company, routines that maintain organization and orderliness are essential to a smooth and efficient flow of activities. Implementation of this method "cleans up" and organizes the workplace basically in its existing configuration, and it is typically the starting point for shop-floor transformation.

The 5S pillars, Sort (Seiri), Set in Order (Seiton), Shine (Seiso), Standardize (Seiketsu), and Sustain (Shitsuke), provide a methodology for organizing, cleaning, developing, and sustaining a productive work environment. 5S encourages workers to improve the physical setting of their work and teaches them to reduce waste, unplanned downtime, and in-process inventory. A typical 5S implementation would result in significant reductions in the square footage of space needed for existing operations. It also would result in the organization of tools and materials into labeled and color-coded storage locations, as well as "kits" that contain just what is needed to perform a task.

5S provides the foundation on which other lean methods, such as TPM, cellular manufacturing, just-in-time production, and six sigma, can be introduced effectively.

    Very useful PowerPoint presentation.

Yes, this falls under Total Quality Management (TQM), but it is beneficial in all departments and even in our daily lives. 5S represents five good housekeeping principles: 1S - Sorting/Cleaning up, 2S - Organize and Identify, 3S - Regular Cleaning and Maintenance, 4S - Standardize - Make it easy to Maintain, and 5S - Sustain the system.

    Thank you for sharing.
