Hi,

When anybody in your team fails to meet expectations set for their work, or when someone needs a little pep talk, or when someone's work is to be reviewed for performance improvement, you need to coach them. It is a skill that every team leader should possess. Coaching is different from training and mentoring.

Here's a presentation to help you understand what coaching is.

As always, I look forward to your feedback.

Very nice presentation - one of the first ones on coaching, I think. Can you explain how it is different from training apart from the one-to-one aspect? Different things are given in different books. Also, a company in Bangalore was claiming that their coaching model (questioning techniques) suffices for all kinds of coaching. Don't you feel career coaching and business coaching are somewhat specialized? Is your presentation from the perspective of a life coach? Can you also explain the different kinds of coaching - life coach, business coach, executive coach, etc.?

Hi Hiren50, First, thank you for your response.

Training is quite different from coaching in terms of skill building, transfer of knowledge, individual attention, duration, relationship of a trainer/trainee vs coach/charge, preparation, and so on. You could compare each of these attributes to see the difference between training and coaching.

My presentation focuses more on performance coaching, especially in a BPO environment where there are repetitive tasks performed by a front-line executive. However, the fundamental principles and the 5-step coaching process could be applied to any type - whether it be a life coach, business coach, or a sports coach.

I have provided some resources for reference in the presentation itself to gain clarity on the differences between seemingly similar functions - training, coaching, counseling, and mentoring.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I will be happy to assist.

Warm Regards, KayBee
