Hi Ravi,
In past in our company there was no concept of giving spl time for people to carry out their personal work. In sever cases only we use to permit the concerned employee to go out of company premises that too by deducting his salary or deducting the time taken from his over time ( this is the general rule followed in gulf countries) but we have revised this rule and have introduced the concept of short leave for every one in the company. They can avail at least 2 short leave of 2 hrs each in the current payroll period, if it exceeded the same rule was applied. Deducting the salary or the overtime, which i think is right because no one will exploit the rule and they can still carry out their personal work.

Surjeetlko and Pankaj have suggested some points which are worth consideration.

Let us look at this topic from both the perspectives.

From an employee's point of view: An employee works for an employer to earn bread and butter for his family. But yes, he will not allow his employer to treat him like a slave, and thus may take it as a matter of right to do domestic chores in between his 'official hours'.

From an employer's point of view: An employer hires an employee with a sole purpose of running his business. Each hour of his employees is a cost for him. He would prefer to employ one 'Runner / Peon' to take care of the personal work of his employees rather than letting his employees remain absent from their desks.

More often than not no management is so thick-skinned that it cannot allow people to go and do their personal work.

So to conclude, if an employee needs to do personal work, he has to manage his time in a manner so that it doesnt cost his employer.

A question to Ravi, what would you do if you happen to become an Employer someday and face a similar situation? An answer to this will clear your doubts.

Dear Devashish,

Do you think that you are getting salary for your house hold work?, NO Man, think from the employer's side. Employee has commitment towards job and has to fulfill.

No body is suppose to do house hold work during office hours he has to manage by his own smartly. Will you please let me know why CL (Casual Leaves) and short leaves ment for??.

My Dear Friend if employee is working for 6 days a week and having option of short leaves and causal leaves then why not he/she is not utilizing the same for household work.

Ask to field executive to favour you doesn't harm but a matter of attitude problem.

One side you are talking about urban culture and on other side you are not comfortable with plastic money or online transection. Today you are not suppose to stick on long queues because in the near market you can find out facility of electricity bill payment, phone bill payment etc.. even one phone call can solve your all problem.

But the only thing is that you people want one day off or off whenever you required for your personal work instead of understanding the situation and logic behind the same.

THINK FROM EMPLOYER'S SIDE AND YOUR PROBLEM WILL SOLVE.

Dear Pankaj,
Perhaps we should note a point that most of India's work force is there in non-metro cities/towns where people have started using ATMs but to the extent of withdrawing money only, leave alone credit cards and online bill payments.
As far as favor of field executives/relatives/neighbours is concerned, they may help you once in a while but not on a regular monthly/fortnightly basis. And here we are talking about all the employees and not an individual only.
As far as queues are concerned, one can visit BSES or any govt. office and see the number of working class people there.
Howver, as everybody has said here: short leaves, 5days work and concierge service help to solve this problem to the extent.
Bottom line is, one's personal (so called house hold) life and professional life and complimentary to each other we have to see from both (employee and employer) prospective to devise any policy or else conflicts are bound to happen.
Regards,
Devashish.

Dear Ravi,
You are correct, we need some time for completing personal works. As pankaj said two short leaves and one casual leave is enough to do our personal works. Otherwise you can take help from your colleagues who are attending out station works regularly (Banks, Govt Offices etc...).

Always thinking about tricks and tactics to avail benefits from the employer from both hands. You must eligible for increment of 10 times in your current salary along with 5BHK bungalow, one luxury car with driver, 4 servants, 2 days a week job, 3 weeks outstation family holiday package and much more…. Keep it up..
Best Wishes

this thread of Ravi's is indeed thoughtful in a way...I agree to it and nice to know that a male has said so...maybe it should be this way..how to balance personal work amidst our profession... ppl can come out with so many suggestions but it all depends on the individuals nature of job..circumstances...not every month we are offered CL or short leaves...
In many families...if the men works..then the female should handle them..if both works ..lol..its chaos then...not all neighbors or all of us have ppl working in some dpts or kind enough to help us...or we do the same for them in turns...it all depends on how we manage it.....there are professions where ppl work for 14/15 hrs also....hmmmm..maybe instead of giving out suggestion we can share our real life events on how we handle...
but this will always exist...
