Hi,

My name is Shruti. I am a student of DU, 3rd year. My college has established a Placement Cell, and I have been chosen as the representative by all my classmates. I am completely new to this role and would like to know the following:

- How is HRM helpful to both industries and students in terms of career prospects? (I am interested in this because we have a 3-year graduation course in HRM, and we need to market our course to prospective industries.)

- What things should be kept in mind when approaching companies?

- How can I create my college brochure that will be presented to the companies?

- What should be the rules and regulations of the Placement Cell? (For example, a rule could be that a student cannot hold more than 2 appointment letters.)

Thank you.

Hi Shruti,

It's good that you have been chosen as a representative of the student placement cell. This will be a learning experience for you on how to sell yourself.

Since you will get a chance to interact with a lot of HR professionals across various industries, I think you should be at the forefront as the face of your institute. HR is all about good PR, and the more you interact, the more confident you will become in selling yourself as you learn about the current industry requirements and trends.

To start off, you should be clear about your topic, HRM. Now, what are all the subjects you have under this specialization?

When making the brochure, make sure to include:

- Institute's profile/photo
- Director's page
- Facilities provided
- Any industry tie-ups?
- Seminars conducted throughout the year
- Courses offered
- Student profiles along with basic qualifications and experience, if any

Make sure you are not making any spelling mistakes as that may affect your institute and, ultimately, all of you.

Create a strong database of companies first by searching through the web.

Send the brochures to all the companies and follow up with them. Request an appointment with the HR person, and if you get it, go with a presentation.

Initially, you may not achieve success, but eventually, you will start getting responses.

Ideally, companies are looking to recruit in the months of April and May.

Cheers,

Hello All,

I have a similar concern, i.e., in the context of placements. Our college, Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan-Marshall University, has a placement head, but not much has been happening there. We students want to start a placement cell that will facilitate us during our internships as well as final placements. Can someone please guide us on how to start the work? We have our brochures ready, but we are stuck on how to contact companies and whom to approach. Please help us with this.

Regards, Sneha Raj, 1st-year MBA Student, Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan-Marshall University, Bangalore

Dear user,

Starting a placement cell is not a game; in practical terms, it is very hard to establish because there are lots of things you need to do, such as making contacts with organizations, connecting with other placement cells, maintaining healthy relationships with HRs, and dedicating a significant amount of time to achieve success.

So, while your plan is not bad at all, pursuing this initiative may negatively impact your studies. It would be better to analyze the situation thoroughly before making a decision.

Feel free to reach out if you have any other queries.

With Regards,
Aakil
