Hi all,

I have experience working as a .NET developer, and I am looking to change my field from .NET to SAP HR. I want to know if HR is the right module for me. Also, I want to know how to get started and what the job market is like for this module in the US.

Thanks,
Paddy

Dear Paddy,

As you are a .NET developer, I request you to consider exploring roles in HR and ABAP-HR. The HR module in SAP can be quite complex, with a structure that differs significantly from the other modules. HR utilizes more infotypes than any other module in SAP. Therefore, I suggest you delve into both areas simultaneously. However, it is essential that you establish yourself as a technical consultant in SAP before transitioning into a role as an HR Generalist. This path offers a great opportunity for your career growth.

Hi Vishaka,

Thanks for the reply. Since I am completely new to SAP, can you explain a little bit about the HR module and ABAP HR module, and what is the difference between the two? What is the advantage of doing ABAP HR for me?

Thanks,
Paddy

Dear Paddy,

Let me do the same.

As in your technical way, ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming). SAP is developed in ABAP. Like C++, C, C#, Java, ABAP is also a programming language for SAP.

In SAP, there are three categories: 1. Technical, 2. Functional, 3. Technofunctional.

1. Technical modules include:
a. Basis (like network administrator)
b. ABAP (programmer).

2. Functional modules include:
a. Finance
b. Controlling
c. HR
d. Sales and distribution
e. Material management... and many more modules.

3. Techno-Functional:
a. ABAP HR
b. CRM
c. BI (Business Intelligence)
and many others.

First things first, SAP is already developed ready-to-use software for all countries and all types of businesses.

In HR, a module is already developed. What will you do after completing this course?
1. End-user (only entering data) (similar to an accountant working in Tally).
2. Configuration (customizing as per company or client needs).

SAP HR consultants in IT companies will go to the client's place where SAP is to be implemented and sit with HR personnel from the client company. They understand their needs and customize the module according to the company's requirements. They structure reports and send them to ABAP developers for writing the customization program.

If you are doing the ABAP module, you can customize any modules like MM, Finance, SD, etc., but you cannot do it for HR. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the HR module is more complicated compared to others. It is a very important module. After doing ABAP-HR, you can become a programmer for that specific module. HR is a core area, and ABAP HR is the programming area.

If you want to be in the HR module, you need to understand the core HR area of the company. You must have experience in HR in any company to quickly grasp the HR module and secure a job. I recommend you to go ahead and do ABAP HR since you are already a programmer. Then, you can update yourself with new upcoming modules like e-recruitment (similar to job portals like Naukri, Monster, etc.). SAP always has updates. Try it first, and the rest will follow.

It's more than an ocean.

All the best.

Contact me if you need further clarification.

With regards,
G.R. Vishaka Guru.

Hi Vishaka Sir,

I have been working as an HR generalist for the past 1.5 years. I am interested in pursuing SAP in HR. I hold a degree specializing in HR, Bachelor of Labour Management (B.L.M).

Could you please provide me with details on where to contact to pursue SAP, or advise me if I need more experience in the HR field before doing so? I am unfamiliar with how to proceed with SAP. Your guidance and details would be greatly beneficial to me.
