EPFO Nominee Updation: Employer or Employee Responsibility?

Is EPFO nominee updation the employer's responsibility, or does the employee have to do it? My company management suggested updating the nominee for all employees because unskilled people may not know how to do it. Should I initiate the update process, or can I educate them to do it themselves?

Training Workers on Technology Use

Can you teach them to do it? How many of them are educated and capable of using computers and smartphones?

In many of our clients (where we do compliance audits), IR teams have conducted numerous training workshops to teach workers (including contract workers) how to effectively use the PF and ESIC websites and to understand their rights. However, they still need to assign one person in IR/HR to assist those who approach them claiming the system is not working.

Maintaining Records and Hybrid Approach

Your director's idea is good. However, you must maintain detailed records to defend your actions in case they are challenged later.

I suggest a hybrid approach. Teach the workers and provide assistance for those who still request help.

Taking initiative for EPFO nominee updates

Taking initiative to get the form filled is well advised, as the EPFO would follow up with you for compliance. They won't pursue the members directly but will go after you. Most importantly, considering the problems it would cause in the case of no nomination in the unfortunate event of the demise of any member, it would be much better to make that extra effort.
