Hello all, I work in a very reputed school in Raipur, Chhattisgarh since August 2016. In December 2016, I found out that I was a month pregnant, but I was equally capable of working as other teachers. In January, I reported this news to our headmistress. Everything was fine previously, but just after a month, she called me and asked me to take a year off from work due to my pregnancy. When I refused, she intentionally took me off my classes and didn't allow me to contribute to any work. I requested our principal after this, and she gave me until April 2017 to continue the job, after which I would have to leave. In June, after the summer vacation, when I applied for maternity leave, she refused and didn't assure me of job security. If I am unable to return within three months of delivery, I will lose my job. I am very upset. Is this valid? What should I do?

Moreover my due date is on August 2017. So I have applied for maternity leave 8 weeks before my due date. Please suggest. Shall I file a complaint?

Dear Sommou, if you are a regular employee of the school and have proper documentation, then you will be covered under the Maternity Act, and job security is also taken care of under this act. You need to submit a written application to the management not for 3 months but for 26 weeks of maternity leave. After receiving a reply from them in writing, you may decide on the further course of action. Also, if they deny in writing, you can go to the nearest labor office for assistance and seek help from them. They will surely be helpful in this matter.
Thank you so much, Manoj Kamble ji, for your kind suggestion. I was a regular employee. I have my appointment letter from the school as well as my ID card. Moreover, I have a bank statement showing continuous salary payments up to June 2017. I believe all these documentations are sufficient. @MANOJKAMBLE
