Maternity Leave Legislation in Karnataka
The only legislation governing maternity leave is the Maternity Benefit Act, which is a central Act covering Karnataka as well. According to this Act, women employees are eligible for 12 weeks of maternity leave, which is paid leave. In case of complications arising out of childbirth, an additional one-month leave can also be granted, subject to the production of proof in this regard.
Additionally, there is a provision for paying Rs 3,500 as a maternity bonus if no postnatal care is provided to the employee by the employer. However, there is no provision for paternity leave in any labor legislation in India.
