This is to inform you that professional tax is not applicable uniformly across the entire state of Tamil Nadu. It will be determined by the respective Corporations/Municipalities, and it must be remitted to the specific Corporations/Municipalities where the branch office is located.

Thank you anyway. I guess we will be able to understand the slabs and rates as they are given in English in a table form. Can you confirm whether the Tuticorin post area (which was earlier out of the municipal zone) and the other smaller settlements/villages nearby have to pay the same rate?

It depends on the area where your establishment is located, whether it comes under Corporation or Municipality jurisdiction. If your establishment falls within the limits of Tuticorin Corporation, then you will have to remit the payment according to the new slab. Since we are unable to locate your office area, we will not be able to provide specific advice on this matter. Please verify the coverage area and proceed accordingly.

Thank you for your message. We do not have an office there, just want to enhance my knowledge.
Question on Professional Tax Rates
One last question: Have all corporations and municipalities issued rates for professional tax? Or if someone has not notified the same, is there a general rate that will apply? Is it then possible that some employees may not be paying professional tax at all since their office is in a place not notified as such?

We came to know that all corporations/municipalities have revised the PT slab with effect from 1st Oct '13 (2013-14 (2)), across Tamil Nadu, and we are in the process of collecting the relevant notifications from each corporation/municipality. Please note that there is no general rate of applicability to remit the PT. It is the responsibility of the employer to verify the slab, deduct the payment from employees, and remit it to the respective corporations/municipalities. You may feel free to write to us at the given email address for any clarifications.
