Profession Tax Updates

No Profession Tax on salaries less than ₹15,000/- (earlier applicable from a salary of ₹5,000/- onwards). There are only two taxable slabs: salaries between ₹15,001/- to ₹20,000/- are taxed at ₹150/- per month, and salaries above ₹20,000/- are taxed at ₹200/- per month.

• Companies not registered under the APVAT Act and having a turnover of less than ₹10.00 Lakhs do not attract any Profession Tax. (Earlier, all companies were taxed at ₹2,500/- per annum.)

• Directors drawing remuneration from the company (other than those nominated by the Government) are only liable to pay a Profession Tax of ₹2,500/- per annum. (Earlier, all directors (other than those nominated by the Government) were liable to pay a Profession Tax of ₹2,500/- per annum.)

PT Registration and Applicability in West Bengal and Orissa

We have PT registration in West Bengal. We have engaged some workers, and appointment letters were issued from the Kolkata office. The workers are engaged at a construction site in Orissa State, and they are originally from Orissa.

Please guide me on whether PT will be applicable or not. If applicable, which state PT slab should be followed.

Thanks,

Professional Tax and Regional Variations

PT is a state affair. I think the PT slab changes suggested here seem to be applicable for the state of Hyderabad. I don't think the PT slab for Maharashtra has changed. It was last changed in 2009-2010. In case there are any changes to the Maharashtra PT slab, colleagues, please forward the circular copy for information and to make necessary changes in payroll.

Clarification on Gujarat Commercial Tax PT Act

Referring to Krutika Patel's reply, the Gujarat commercial tax website PT Act states a ₹200 tax for salaries above ₹3,000 after 1.4.08. It has two schedules: one before April 2008 and the other after April 2008. However, the notification indicates different tax rates. Which one is correct?

Practicing members, please reply. Below is the link: http://commercialtax.gujarat.gov.in/...rule/Ptact.pdf
