Hi All,

We are currently creating a relocation policy for our organization (IT Consulting). Relocation includes the movement of employees from one center to the other either on deputation or permanent transfer. We have decided that any tenure more than 6 months would be considered as a permanent relocation. This would mean that he/she would not be entitled to the daily allowances while on deputation.

What we are grappling with is, what happens when a project spills over to the seventh or eighth month or a year? Do we continue giving the daily allowance, or do we stop, or do we reduce the allowance? Please keep in mind that the resource/manager may not be responsible for the work that spills over after the sixth month.

How do we lay it down in a policy? Can somebody help me?

Thank You.

Hi Kiran,

I think you should reconsider the tenure of over 6 months for relocation. First and foremost, identify the typical project period. Also, work on the cost comparison for deputation and relocation in a hypothetical case starting with 2 months, and then decide on the tenure for relocation.

In case you stick to six months only and later the project spills over, the project manager would be in a position to inform you at least a couple of months before if the project will spill over. In such a case, it would be more feasible for you to continue on deputation as it would only be a matter of a couple of months. If the deadline is extended further, then consider shifting to relocation after preparing the cost comparison again.

I hope this helps.

Anuradha

Anuradha,

Please excuse me for the delayed response. I shall keep in mind your suggestion while drafting the policy. If any more ideas cross your mind, please feel free to share them.

Thanks much!
