My name is Amin, and currently, I am working as a technical scaffold engineer. Does anyone know how to calculate the load on a scaffold and the permitted maximum height of the scaffold?

Thanks and regards,
Amin

Dear Amin,

Warm welcome to our Citehr EHS forum. Earlier, we discussed scaffold calculation. You can get scaffolding-related data from an earlier thread (please follow the link mentioned below), but we have not yet found a final solution. Nevertheless, I hope you find a solution. Keep participating, sharing, and gaining knowledge from our forum.

Dear friend,

All scaffolding height is determined by using a height-to-base ratio of 4:1. This means the height can be up to 4 times the minimal base width.

For example, a scaffolding with a minimal base width of 2 meters can have a height of up to 8 meters.

Regarding load, there are three types of scaffolding:
1. Light-duty, which can handle up to 120 kg/square meter
2. Medium-duty, which can handle up to 240 kg/square meter
3. Heavy or special duty, which can handle loads above 240 kg/square meter.

Considerations for Scaffold Height and Wind Factor

Regarding height, one more thing to consider is the wind factor. The height of tower scaffolding outside the building should have a height-to-base ratio of 3.5:1. For mobile scaffolding, the height outside the building should be at a ratio of 3:1 to account for the wind factor. This difference in ratios is crucial in protecting the scaffolding from heavy winds.

Scaffolding Regulations and Types

The law requires that no scaffold shall be erected, moved, dismantled, or altered except under the direct supervision of a competent person. Scaffolding is a specialization.

There are more than 30 different types of scaffolds. Scaffolds can be supported, under-hung, hanging, or bracket-supported. Materials used include bamboo, aluminum, fiberglass, and steel.

Common Types of Scaffolds

Common types of scaffolds are tube and coupler, system, and welded frame. Welded frame scaffolds are only for light duty. OSHA standards, which are widely adopted, provide load capacities as already mentioned by hseofficerjsk.

Details on ground preparation, sole boards, base plates, post spacing, bracing requirements, guardrails, and toe boards are all outlined in the standards for light duty and medium duty scaffolds. With prescribed post spacing, the scaffold height in this case can be up to 125 feet.

Height and Load Considerations

For independent, tower, and mobile scaffolds, the 1:4 (1 base width to 4 height) ratio applies. You can increase the height of scaffolds by using suitable ties, guy wires, and rakers. However, this is applicable for scaffolds up to a height of 40 feet. Beyond this height, the scaffold should be designed by a structural engineer.

Heavy-duty scaffolds should only be designed by a structural engineer. There can be dead load and live load on scaffolds. Though the construction method is the same, post spacing and bracing will differ depending on the loads.

The weight of all scaffold components plus the intended load must be considered when assessing the load on a scaffold. A factor of safety of 4 is required for any scaffold.

Although bamboo is accepted, many organisations have banned use of bamboo. In our company we make steel pipes with couplers compulsory for scaffolds. Thanks and Regards, Sudhir

It is advisable to refer to the recommendations of scaffold manufacturers for the design load. Refer to the link below to know more about scaffolds: Scaffold Handbook

Hi Vamsi, see the animation picture. If something happens like that, can TIEWIRE hold the planks? I don't have the scaffolding IS standard. Some of our members can help you with the IS standard.

Dear sir,

I need the scaffolding volume for staging purposes. Please find below the building measurements and send the volume list as soon as possible.

Building Height: 55 feet
Building Width: 60 feet
Building Length: 60 feet

Note: All measurements mentioned in feet, please convert them into meters. Preferred Cuplock Verticals: 3 meters only. Cuplock Horizontals: 2 meters, 1.2 meters, or 1.5 meters.

Thank you.
