Hi all,

I need to fix the designation for our employees; ours is a Garment industry. Can you please guide me on this? I also need to determine the grade based on their salary.

I am looking forward to your valuable replies.

Hi Sugees P.,

Well, I am not actually from the garment industry, but I can give you a hint about where to start up the process.

- You will have to sit with one of the oldest/experienced employees over there from the management.
- Jot down the number of departments that can be worked out in your company.
- For each department, you may add the prefix of the following hierarchy of designations. These are more or less the same everywhere (Guys, please correct me if I'm wrong):
- Trainee (on stipend only, not an employee of the company)
- Jr. Executive
- Exec
- Sr. Exec
- Assistant Manager
- Deputy Manager/Associate Manager
- Manager
- Sr. Manager
- Asst. VP
- VP/GM
- Country Head
- Director

The above is, no doubt, a very generalized form of designation hierarchy. You can also choose to omit/jump on some of the heads if need be. Make sure to discuss these with the management and thereby take the assent of the employees as well before making the final decision.

Kindly check if this can be of some help.

Dear Sugees,

Oh, I forgot to mention about the grades that you want to allot. These can be framed by you and the management to help HR identify the technical aspects. They can be company-specific. For example:

Designation | Grade
Trainee | S1
Office Assistant | S2
Jr. Exec | E3
Exec | E2
and so on...

I hope this information may be helpful for you.

Good Luck,

Hi. Before jumping into designations, I believe you should certainly do an Organisational Mapping in terms of Job Analysis. This will give you the spread of employees in terms of their:

1. Roles / Profiles (there may be just one/two person(s) in a Role)
2. Total Experience & Experience in the Org
3. Edu Qualifications
4. Skills/Competency requirements
5. Basic Salary Banding

This will help you in creating Job/Role Bands:

1. Leadership (L)
2. Managerial (M)
3. Supervisory (S)
4. Junior (J)

Now, you need to decide how many levels you want in each Band - L 1, L 2, L 3 .......L n, M 1, M 2, M 3...... M n, etc.

You may want an equal number of levels across or have more at the bottom (J & S) and fewer at the top (M & L).

And then, finally getting into Salary Grading... The above will automatically help you in this regard.

Cheers,
K
