Dear All,

I had a question in mind about what should be checked during a background investigation. Some key points to consider are:

1. Criminal background of the person
2. Cross-checking with the previous employer regarding the person's behavior, salary, and performance
3. Verifying the degrees with the university/school

I would appreciate your input on what else should be checked during the same process.

Hi,

For background verification, I think the following details are sufficient:

1. Previous Employment Pay slip
2. His Relieving letter or Experience from the previous employer

Along with this, you can call the previous employer and do checks for his period of work in that previous company, his conduct of performance during that tenure, about the details he provided at the time of the interview, etc...

Waiting to know some more from others...

Dear All,

Please go through the attachment, and there is a reason mentioned in the same for why background check is necessary. Criminal background can be verified from the data available in police records, but it is a lengthy process, the same case applies to Universities.

Most of the time, a person may produce fake certificates, salary slips, as well as fake references. In such cases, it becomes very difficult to rely on such reference checks.

Dear Taruna,

I understand that everything covered by you can verify a person's identity but nowadays everything is available in duplicate or maybe fraud. There was a website available some time back on the net for fake degrees, and the site name was www.fakedegrees.com. Nowadays, it is not available anymore, but this is the only site that has come into the picture. There may be some more websites that we are not aware of.

If a person has worked with three or more organizations, are you conducting reference checks (background investigations) with all the organizations? There will be cases where people claim that a particular industry has closed down, and because of that, he/she changed jobs.

Now, especially with smaller industries that are not well-known, how can we cross-check if there was any existing industry with such a name?

These are some questions and many more.

Hi,

For the background investigation:
1) Employers can ask for the photocopy or original documents of recent degree certificates for the education check and contact the universities or colleges to verify.
2) Employers can process drug tests/health checks.
3) Employers can conduct criminal background checks via third-party companies.
4) Reference check: They can contact the employers or hiring/reporting managers to verify his employment, duration, names, rehire eligibility.

Just a curiosity,
Are these legal questions to ask the candidates or are they necessary?
1. Not many people maintain employment documents such as relieving letters, payslips, PAN, Form 16, or experience letters. When contacting employers directly, why would you need all these documents?
2. Normally, employees have to surrender all company assets when they leave the company, including their ID.
3. Why do we need a candidate's family details for employment reasons?

I really appreciate anyone who can answer the above questions.
