Hi all,

I'm sorry for posting this query of mine here since it is related to advertising, but I had already posted it on citesales.com, but to no avail. Nobody responded, maybe because there are very few members there. Please, at least respond to the poll even if you don't respond to this query.

I have to prepare a write-up on 'In-film & In-serial Advertising' for my Advertising class. Please give your views on the same topic.

Let me clarify the topic by giving a few examples. An example of in-film advertising can be 'Hum Tum'. In that movie, Saif Ali Khan was a cartoonist in Times of India. An example of in-serial advertising can be the serial 'Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi'. In that serial, the credit for Jassi's make-over goes to VLCC, Bausch & Lomb, etc.

Please respond to the poll and give your views on the topic. Even if you people don't have any concern with marketing, then also please respond, since nobody is untouched by the world of ads, all thanks to media.

Thanks and regards,
Reena

Hi Reena,

CiteHR Rocks.... Give some time CiteSALES will also start rocking.

As for In-serial and In Movie Advertising, I agree that these are good mediums to advertise. TOI had done it quite nicely in "Humtum". Coca-Cola with Hrithik Roshan in a couple of films, Bournvita in "Koi Mil Gaya", Rajdoot in "Hero"...

However, when it comes to TV serials, these people are overdoing it. Showing a showroom or using a product is okay, but if the story is twisted and lengthened to promote a particular brand [like "Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin"], it is not acceptable. The serials and films are supposed to entertain people. If they can promote a product without hampering the entertainment aspects, it is acceptable. But when promoting a brand makes the serials and films boring, it is not acceptable.

Hi Azmal,

Thank you for responding. I totally agree with you. CiteHR rocks! Thank you for sharing your views. But don't you think that apart from serials, sometimes in movies also, all this is overdone?

All other members, please do provide your inputs as well.

Regards,
Reena

Hi Reena,

To date, I have not seen a movie that has overdone the advertising. Anyway, I don't watch many movies. If you could give me a couple of names... Some of the movies that incorporate brand promotion are the 007 James Bond Movies, which promote BMW vehicles, along with other brands such as OMEGA watches. However, they do not disrupt the story or the characters.

In some of the recent Indian serials, what we have observed is that the story and screenplay are altered specifically to promote a product or brand, which, in my opinion, should not be done. Anything that deviates from its core purpose (movies/serials for entertainment) is unlikely to succeed in the long run.

Yeah! I agree with Azmal. Anything which is done within limits is acceptable. For example, if you watch the current serial "Kareena-Kareena," she uses one line, "Kyon ho gaya na kuch ekdam alag... something of this sort for a candy," it doesn't distract viewers' attention and flow of the serial.
